can any1 help?????

I have a 16.2hh TB i have had her 4 months before i got her she had been very badly neglected her teeth were very sharp her poll pelvis and back was out and was very underweight!!! now after lots of tlc etc shes looks 100% and is ready for work she has new tack which fits but i am rideing her in a loose ring snaffle which she hates she seems to mouth it all the time and doesnt like contact, does any1 know a good bit we could try?? she doesnt seem strong and has quite good manners i dont want a harsh bit but 1 that does offer some form of control

i'd try her in a plain rubber snaffle then, they're cheap and a lot of horses like them. otherwise, if that's not enough, a myler comfort snaffle or a sprenger snaffle with lozenge in the middle, or similar - something which doesn't have such a nutcracker action, basically. hope that helps a bit.

If she's an ex racer then she will take a while to take a contact....if she's mouthing the bit then that's a good thing! I'd spend lots of time in the school getting her moving forward and then slowly taking up a contact on her. Maybe try her in a french link for a while with fulmer cheeks so you can help her with her steering.

Ty wouldn't take a contact for a month or so but once he realised it was more comfortable to work like that he was fine.

Both my horses seem to like a low port comfort snaffle from myler. and fred is very fussy in his contact, and he seems to like it better than any other bit i've tried.

I suggested a myler comfort snaffle in the common room, if she's not strong. put my 148cms in one, he was very forward but didn't like you touching his mouth, and he went xc in one and everything. I used to swear by them until I got my last horse, who went in a neue schule. That's another one to try. Or sweet iron/happy mouth loose ring.

Would suggest a straight bar happy mouth or a 'linked' eggbut. Either a french link or a lozenge link.

As somebody said, do not ask for contact for a while. Give her chance to settle and get used to all the new sensations.

Well done on your hard work helping her. Goodluck

Try to find a bit bank so that you can try bits cheaply otherwise you'll spend a fortune buying bits you'll never use again. I agree it's a good thing the horse is mouthing the bit and it will take time. What about a racing dee snaffle,he may be familiar with that. Maybe it's the loose ring catching him a little bit. If you want to try something similar to a Myler without the cost try Eldonian's centre revolver bits. They have a revolving lozenge which is vey mild and only cost about £22.50

I covuld have written this 4 years ago when i got my ex racer, she sounds so much like my girl. she was scared of the bit and i figured that she didn't like the nutcracker action. I put her in the myler also and now go between that and a eggbut french link. I wouldnt use the loose ring in case it nips her. My horse isn't strong either so i felt that both of these bits would suit her.
good luck with her

thanks to every1 who has helped me with my problem i think im goin to try a happy mouth bit!! im still nt sure how to use this forum haha
