hi, we took on our fisrt horse for our teenage daughter, we have only owned him for 7 months. He has suddenly got a muzzle of bumps and now the hair on his flank is peeling off leaving pink patches of skin. The person who owned him before left him in a field alone for six years and didn't see the vet in that time... We have worked really hard to bring him back into work, feeding the correct diet and doing everything a responsilbe owner should do. He is a grey if that makes a difference. I would be so grateful for any info on what it could be. He is wormed and vaccinated.

It sounds like some kind of allergy....

Is the horse out with any others who have similar symptoms?

I would get a vet out personally, but also check out your grazing for anything that could cause a reaction.

photos would be a good idea

are the patches on his flank roundish? if the hair has scabbed then fallen off these patches is it likely to be ringworm (very common)

the two things are probably related, but do consider that they might not be

hi thankyou for you very quick replys, firstly he is out with another who has no signs of bumps or a peeling coat. Yes the on his flank is like a hard scab and as it has peeled away has taken the coat with it. I would say in total it is about 6 - 8 inch inch patch. in the middle of it is a perfect circle. the size of a 10p peice. I haven't taken photo's of it yet.

I agree with this, and would get a vet to look asap. My other thought was possibly rainscald? Probably way off with that, but it can cause quite large areas of raw skin to appear. Hope you get it sorted soon, and let us know what it turns out to be x

Your latest update sounds very much like round worm, make sure you wear gloves or at least clean your hand really well when you have been around him.

As you probably know it is not a worm but a fungus, so a topical cream from your vet will clear it up :)

Roundworm? Roundworm (ascarids) are found in the intestines. Did you mean ringworm?

I agree with those who have said - get the vet out - asap.

wash horse normally and rinse, then rinse with imavoral wash and leave to dry without rubbing or scraping in the sun then do it again in 7 days time, should be clear by then, you could put a topical cream like lamasil on the open ones which are oozing.
