Hi everyone, brand new here so..Hello!! :D
Ive got a horse on loan, had him 4 weeks now and have noticed he has a ball dangling from his sheath. Its about the size of a golf ball, maybe slightly smaller.. same skin colour as the sheath and it basically just dangles there while everything else is tucked away

Any ideas what it is??

I did ask the owner but she said its nothing to worry about and just ignore it.
This is my first loan horse so I did just ignore it.. but two people on the yard have commented this weekend asking if he is ok, so now Im worried and curious as to what it is!!

If the owner doesn't actually know perhaps you could take some photographs and post here or in the veterinary section...

If a vet does a reduced cost call out day to your yard and someone is having vaccs or other non emergency work done you could always ask if you can tag onto the visit and get him/her have a quick look - for your exam fee and a contribution to the call out...

Ok so I finally got the pics today... Now how do I get them on here??!
Its asking me for a web address... but they aren't on the web!! Can anyone help a numpty? :D

Get an account with photobucket or similar... It's just a place to store piccies...

Upload the photos from your pc/laptop to photobucket

When you hover over a photograph you'll see four boxes - choose the 2nd one down that says Direct Link and click on it...it'll automatically copy...

Click on the little yellow box on here above the text box and paste that code into the pop up... The photo will show up in your post...

If it's big you can just choose the edit option in PB and resize it - save as the original copy and it'll resize it in the post automatically...

HTH :)

You need to open a photobucket account, upload photos on to there, this will then give you a website x

Sarcoid by the look of it. I think you need to be speaking to the horses owner for more information on if it has been treated in the past.

I think it is rather irresponsible of the owner to loan you a horse with a problem like that without being honest to you.

Looks suspiciously like a sarcoid to me. Might be a good candidate for banding. Best thing to do is have a vet take a look at it and see what they think, it's in a bit of a dodgy area.

Thanks all :)
I'll make sure he sees a vet. Are these things painful or harmful or are they just benign growths?
I've googled a little but its either very technical language or very vague info that I find!

Some horses are prone. Geldings are often seen with them round the sheath area if they have them. Keep an eye an other areas for more. I echo the banding option, looks ideal. The vet can do this, literally bands it and it eventually drops off.

Sarcoids are a funny thing: they can be aggressive, very horrible, especially if in tack/rubbing areas. They're basically tmours.

My horse had the Liverpool cream treatment for two flat sarcoids, nothing since, thank God.

They don't tend to be painful when they're not open. They certainly aren't benign though-think skin cancer. Like skin cancers in people, some are nastier than others-same goes for sarcoids. Don't mess around with them, if they're not doing anything (bleeding, sore looking, actively growing) just leave them alone; unless they're somewhere they could get in the way, like your horse's, where just the location can cause a problem.

Like the others who've posted, to this non vet eye it does look like a sarcoid of some type...

If the owner's haven't had it vet checked I'd be a tad surprised - and I'd definitely want it checked myself... There's a few different types suited to different treatments - or even ignoring if it's not going to get environmentally irritated...

Fingers crossed your vet will think there are straightforward treatment options... :)

Have a pootle through this link - it might help explain things a bit... Then get a vet to have a peek - s/he can actually get close and have a peek...

Cisco had one its like a wor/growth the vet just tied it off - cut circulation - and it dropped off within a week

Cisco is very prone to growths on his sheath butthey just drop off but that particular one had to be tied

He didnt like it being done so had to be sedated :(

It looks too big for banding - you'd struggle to get a band over and around it without breaking it (the band, not the sarcoid!), although it does have a good neck and could perhaps be done with a ligature. Owner is an irresponsible twit - either she's had the vet to it and ignored advice - or hasn't had the vet. From the position, I would guess it stops horse fully retracting the penis which could lead to infection and certainly can't be comfortable.
