Hi
My Welsh D mare (4yr old) have been on livery for a week now and has settled really well.
I've been giving her a half scoop of kwikbeet, scoop of alfalfa lite and a small handful of coolmix, she gets this in the evening then she goes back out (24/7) the YO has mentioned that she has also been giving her a feed of the chaff and the beet in the morning when she goes to the field to fee her mare, this is to keep mine away from her mare's feed! Last night she told me that she'll be putting a large bale of haylage into the field for then.
Do you think my 4yr old will be getting too much food??
I think i should cut her food right out as she's not in any work and could do without the extra tbh.
Help!
Im a new horse owner and don't want her fat.
I took her for a walk inhand today, around the menage and she was on her toes - normally very, very chilled.
Is this because of the extra food??
I really need some advice...
Thanks

Ive got a 4 year old Welsh D x and he gets a scoop of molli chaff extra and a scoop of cool mix, ive got a big round scoop. And i bought my first big bale of haylege on Monday and he gets a over flowing barrow full shared between him and my Welsh A a day.If YO is going to give her a feed each day then maybe i wouldnt bother. Bears only ridden once a week ATM if he's lucky but he's not really a fizzy horse. Maybe if you just want to bring her in every night give her a little handful just so she knows a routine.

In general, yes, I think that is too much. We had a 3yo and a 4yo Welsh Cob who both blossomed on very little. However, each horse is different, so I would suggest you condition score/weigh him fortnightly, and adjust acordingly.

Thanks.
I think i'll cut the feed out apart from a handful in her manger every evening as she's in a routine of coming in for an hour for a groom etc.

Any horse that is in no work does not need extra feed over and above hay, hayledge or grasss imo. My Welsh D thrives off this and even then on year old hay and strip grazed grass can put on weight easily and he is ridden for miles and does pleasure rides of up to 20 miles each week! He has bags of energy and I always struggle to keep his weight off even though I get through shoes every 3/4 weeks! I give mine a general all round vit supplement in two handfuls of Hi Fi lite.
