My vet has now suggested gabapentin to try and see if that makes any difference. We could try turning her away but I don’t want to stress her out or the risk of laminitis as she’s overweight as it is.
we have said we will give her a few weeks on this and see if there is any change x

I remember that the pony went in to ASHBROOKE VET HOSPITAL would it be worth asking them or is there a way of finding threads from so long ago.?

thank you for thinking of that I’ll have a search. I’ve since got a second opinion from another vet as anything is worth a go and he thinks she could have some kind of tooth abscess as the dentist came a week before she went downhill and he thinks they could be linked. Although we had her on bute it was never a high amount so we have upped her painkillers and see if this makes any difference x

My first thought as soon as you mentioned the head thing was teeth/ears.
I've had one driven potty by deer kegs (several times) but always found nasty bites.
Known of a few react to ear issues in quite an extreme way, and one crack a molar flinching and whacking his own head.
A panic in November causing some kind of head trauma, including the neck damage, ulcers being a secondary. I have heard of tooth abscesses developing after dental treatment more than once, and personally find toothache makes me vile tempered! Maybe ulcers already bubbling under (constant restricted diet combined with changed yard and neighbours) and the mystery event (fireworks, abscess) causing a full blown eruption, constant tension from all the above causing neck issues, resulting in upside down episode... Poor little soul, I hope you get to the bottom of it quickly.

What is her turnout regime? Sounds like you've worked really hard on her
I would get a second vet just to consult on her, exmaine her and check her ovaries as a granulosa cell tumor could cause these symptmoms
.
If dentist came week before change I'd also worry about this, so sounds like a good shout. If second vet check didn't work and she is too obese to turn away on grass I'd look for spend 3 months on a track livery before I gave up if possible

Others have much better ideas than I have, but did the vets do a ACTH test for Cushings? I don't think something like that would cause the extensive changes you are seeing but mine before he was diagnosed would lose the plot occasionally and not come down for a few days but more spookiness and on edge than grumpiness and unhappiness. I hope you can get to the bottom of it soon.

We have put her on bute and 20 paracetamol a day and I cannot tell you what a difference this has made. Last night she walked around the school in hand no head tossing and like her old self! The poor thing has been in agony so the vet definitely thinks it was something caused after the dentist. We are now going to try and find out what tooth is causing the issue which might mean a bone scan. I cannot tell you the relief I feel right now x

Gabapentin is particuarly good for nerve pain, this is why I'm on it for sciatica.
As for the dentist something similar happened to my friends horse and I have PM'd you as I do not want to get done for slander if someone recognises my friends story.

Haven’t read every reply, but have you considered hindgut ulcers/ imbalance? Still not all vets believe in it sadly, but it definitely exists and can be brought on or exacerbated by omeprazole. Did she have Sucralfate with it?

I am so glad that you at least have a reason for her behaviour and hope that you manage to find the source of the pain.

Very happy to read that you are on your way to a solution for her. Hope you can sort whatever is causing her the pain. Poor girl.

We seem to have pain under control but tonight I went to get her in and as I got close she was happily standing at the gate and she just fell to the floor like a tree falling! She got back up and seemed ok but the new vet thinks she fainted so we are pushing for her to be referred to a specialist ASAP x

I replied on reply 41 and sent you a detailed PM as you intimated that her problems may stem from her recent dental treatment.

Just wondered did you have a chance to read it?

There was something on FB a while back that had a horse was almost going to be pts for similar type behaviour that vets couldn't figure out. Then one vet checked for some kind of fly, might burrow in their skin or bites. The horse had these flies round his sheath I think. They got rid of the flies and the horse went back to normal. The flies were essentially driving him crazy.

I can't remember what the flies were called or where the post was so not sure how helpful that is. I will message a friend as I remember she commented on it as they had a horse with it too.

Is there any update on this please? Did you read the PM I sent you? I went to a lot of trouble to write it so it would be nice if you could confirm, thanks.

Starburst, out of interest did you ever find out what the matter was? Searching the forum for info on CTs this thread came up

(I know, last active feb this year, they're not likely to see this but it's worth a shot).

I was hoping to have heard, too. My goodness, the extraordinary lengths these people went to for her. Very stressful situation, not knowing what’s going on.
