hello there, recently we sent my mare to get artificially insemminated, within this week she had her first scan, which showed her in foal, but unfortunately it was lying next to a cyst. yesterday, we found out she had lost the foal. Could this be because of the cyst? or is it usual for a mare to loose her first foal?
we are going to try put her in foal again, do you think the cyst will cause any problems? and can she conceive and have a foal with the cyst there?

many thanks

My mare has a lot of cysts, and her feotus is developing on one

not the best place, but she had her 28 day scan yesterday and there is a heartbeat and it's big, so the vets don't think there will be a problem. The vets told me she could have lost it due to the cyst as the feotus won't be getting the nutrients as it would off the uterus wall, but i've been lucky his time.

I'm no expert though so I will not answer your question, but i just thought it would give you hope.

We have plenty of mares come in to be covered/AI'd with either one or multiple cysts and it doesnt seem to make a lot of differance to the mares chances of concieving or carrying the foal full term.

It totally depends where the cyst is. Cysts are a relatively good indicator of damage/degeneration of the endometrium... so she may be losing it because of that. Conceptus fixation tends to occur next to a cyst (if any are present), but plenty of pregnancies can go ahead regardless. Please let us know where exactly the cyst is.

No consolation, we have just been through exactly the same. In foal and lost it on day 18. One cyst near the horn with implantation right next it. Vet said they have lots of mare who get pregnant with cysts so shouldnt be a problem - could be a number of things. Implantation next to a cyst is apparently common. Am trying one last time with my mare, 16 day scan on the 26th Aug so fingers crossed.

As Lynsey & Sally say, quite correctly - most mares with cysts get in foal without any problem. Concepti tend to fix next to cysts... some say because they get stuck next to them in their mobile phase, or because they have some sort of affinity for the cysts.

It's generally only when a cyst blocks the exit from the oviducts, compromises cervical integrity, or when they are so numerous, and large that they do interfere with the pregnancy.

I'd look to the other factors before even considering the cyst causing the problem:

Anestrus (lactational/true/behavioural)
Chromosomal abnormalities
Nymphomania
Delayed uterine clearance
Endometritis (infectious/non-infectious)
Urovagina
Pneumouterus
Cervical abnormalities
Ovarian tumours
Uterine fibrosis
Uterine sacculations
Blocked oviducts
Hormonal issues
Stallion incompatibility
Reduced immune response
