Thanks to everyone who contributed to my post yesterday when I was wondering what to do with Missie while I’m pregnant. Well you've all convinced me (along with my Mum!) that turning her away for a few months is probably the best (not to mention cheapest) option. So I'm hoping to bring her back to my parents' farm in April time, but as we have no other horses I need to find her a companion.

So... does anyone have or know of a suitable companion horse or pony? I really don't mind about age, sex, height, breed etc, although our grazing is quite rich so it might not be suitable for something prone to or with a history of laminitis. A loan arrangemetn would be ideal as at the moment I'm not sure what I'll be doing with Missie after the baby's born, so it would be good to have the option of reviewing how things are going in the autumn, rather than committing to buying.

Please let me know if you have any ideas, PM me if you prefer. Perhaps there are some other pregnant HHO'ers out there whose horse would like a nice holiday at grass for a few months....?

I have considered charities but as my circumstances may change in a few months time I think this may not be the best option as they tend to want permanent homes for life I believe.

We are in York by the way...

I'd certainly reconsider getting something from a charity. If you are honest and up front with them, they may well have something that needs turning away for 6 months. Even, if you get something from them in the short-term, it will free up a much needed place for another horse.

Try ringing the local Riding Schools. I'm sure there's plenty of stale ponies wanting a good holiday! It worked for me a few years back when I need a companion. I got a depressed, underweight, rather robotic little horse and it went back like a completely different animal. Gave me a bit of satisfaction too that I'd helped him out!

Could you put an ad up in your local tack shop for either a companion or someone to keep their horse there.. maybe offer it for free in return for them looking after your horse for part of the time or after you've had your baby?

I think there's a veteran horse society where retired horses are put to grass and loaned out as companions.

A friend of mine has retired her 30 yr old and looked into it, I'll try and find some more info for you.

Typical! there are always transporters although tis rather a long way I admit... Just trying to sort something out with Ouija-board, if it doesn't work out I'll let you know!
thanks
