I have written about the 'conventional' method of backing youngsters but have to research alternative methods also. I am assuming that by this they mean such as natural horsemanship methods.

Can anyone possibly point me in the right direction and maybe suggest some alternative mthods that I could look into?

David Marlin has just done some research with Monty Roberts into how effective join-up is. I think it was reported in H&H so if you look back in the news archvies you should find it there.

what about racing backings... It's done earlier (and I don't actually know the process) but surely it's doing to be different to some degree and more specialised for the racing indrustry!! Also defo agree with the Kelly marks/Monty Roberts

I am pretty sure Monty did something a while ago whereby he tested the heartrates of the horses he backed, compared to horses backed the convential way... google it or ring up the Kelly Marks team and they may be able to point you in the right direction.x

What about looking into methods from other cultures?

I don't know how they go about it but I'm sure there are differences with established practice for western horses, or for spanish garrucho horses. You could also look into how they back horses in arab nations, and in places like mongolia.

Could they also mean methods no longer in use? I believe that youngsters used to be hobbled, tied up and left to thrash about until they gave up and became 'submissive' (more of an old US method rather than UK one).

I have a friend who is backing a quarter horse at the moment and she is going to some specific "western" classes for backing so I would assume there is some variation there...
