Hi everyone!

Hopefully one of you lovely people can help me clear this up :)

We bought our first pony - Welsh Sec A - back in October. Sadly, we're now trying to find him another home, as my daughter has lost all confidence :(

He came with a Veteran Horse Society passport. Being first time owners, we didn't even realise there was more than one type of passport (and as we weren't planning on showing or competing with him, it has never been an issue for us).

The family who are interested in our pony are looking to compete with him, and are asking for a Welsh Pony & Cob Society passport. I've spoken to them, but I can't get any advice from them til Monday.

I don't have any info on his breeding, so by the looks of things - it doesn't look like I'll be able to apply for a WPCS passport for him (if I've understood their criteria correctly). The only info I have is on his VHS passport, which doesn't include breeding info.

Does anyone know what this would mean for the new family, if they took him on with the VHS passport?

For example - does it just mean that they'd only be able to take him to local, unaffiliated competitions?

I guess they're wanting to be clear on the implications for them if they have a pony without a WPCS passport, but I have literally no idea how it all works :)

Any thoughts / info would be hugely appreciated! I've found the perfect home for our boy, and I really want to help them make sure it's the right decision for them.

Thank you!

If he hasn't got a green welsh pony and cob society passport then he isn't registered and will not be allowed to compete in affiliated showing classes. Dressage, jumping and the likes don't matter.

If he is microchipped get the number and check it with the wpcs to see if he is registered and lost his passport at some stage. If so you will need to pay for a duplicate.

From what you say I highly doubt he is registered though.

Thank you so much EKW!

I'm pretty sure he isn't registered, either :(

So if he's not registered - that doesn't mean he doesn't have 'a passport' (as the VHS is still a legitimate passport?) - it just means they wouldn't be allowed to compete in certain showing classes?

Thank you!

Yup all it means is that the pony is not a registered Welsh Cob with the Welsh Society. The current passport with VHS will now be part of Pet ID if I'm correct as all other passport agency's other then the likes of registered natives and such breeds all bog standard passports are now under one datebase which is Pet-ID.

He/she can still do jumping/dressage and such like just cannot do affiliated showing classes. If the people don't want to do affiliated showing with the pony I don't see why they want him to have a green welch passport.

That's not entirely correct. He will not be eligible to show in an affiliated breed class because he is not of a proven breed. He can still show affiliated in classes which do not specify breed: first ridden, lead rein, workers, small pony etc. Each affiliated show society has its own rules which does make things more complicated and some will "overstamp" a passport issued by another organization to allow the animal in that passport to complete in their affiliated classes. And as already said the passport is perfectly legitimate and he can compete in anything else he likes affiliated or not - just not in a class specifying that he must be registered Sec A.

If the family wanting to buy have a specific affiliated scheme in mind then they should really know the rules of that scheme. Understandably you want to do as much as you can to help - but this is quite a complicated world and they change the rules a lot! You don't want the family trying to come back to you after a year or so complaining that you told them the pony would be eligible and he wasn't so they want to return him.
