I am stuck on my Animal Behaviour Assignment ...

What is meant by Exploitation of Natural Behaviours?

Any ideas much appreciated!

It is using a natural behaviour in an unnatural way - eg watching a horse jump in the field and then getting the brain wave of teaching horses to jump under saddle

I imagine and this may be wrong, behaviour shown spontaneously in a natural environment. So an animal could display hunting and gathering behaviour for example, or even use tools in gathering food that could be replicated, e.g. in a zoo instead of giving food directly you could hide it in a tree trunk.

Taking advantage of a natural activity the animal does anyway. eg dogs go sniffing out smells anyway so lets train them to detect drugs etc.

I had an assignment similar to this for my behavoiur course, as has been said by LHS i think it is taking advantage of a natural behaviour.

So for race horses, you could say you are exploiting there need to be with the herd. I have also heard of people saying that the spanish riding school horses, when they do their 'airs above ground' (sorry if that's not what it's called) exploits natural display behaviours of the stallion.
