hey, i have a rescue welsh sec c mare and i really want to do some showing with her. i don't know anything about her past other than she has shown, she came with an expired qualification card to a hoys class! ive done some local shows and i never seem to do well so i thinki need some tips!! firstly shes on restricted grazing no hard feed, and the amount of hay the vet recomended, yet she;s still got quite a tummy. does anyoen have any tips? especially as she is prone to laminitus and i want her to lose weight before summer. Also in the field she has very showy paces but i cant seem to bring these out in hand or when im riding her? does anyone know what i can do? she can also be nappy and is prone to going on the worng bend though this is getting a bit better with schooling??any other showing tips would be very much appreiciated as first show in april! sorry there are so many questions!! cheers

Not a showing person myself, but would suggest you try to find a local trainer or instructor or even welsh breeder, either someone who shows or has some knowledge of showing. They can hopefully offer more specific advice for showing as you really need someone who knows what they are doing. We all need someone to be our eyes on the ground for us when we start out.

Another option - are there any riding clubs round you that hold showing shows? They might have some friendly members who can help and some do occasional showing clinics where you can pick up tips and get an honest opinion.

Next time at a show, ask the judge at the end of the class what you could do better. If you approach them in a friendly way (obviously!) and explain you want to learn more, most judges if they have time will respond and offer some tips and advice. As for the tummy, best you can do is schooling and fittening work (presume she is regularly wormed?). If she is a rescue case, then she must have lost condition at some stage and maybe needs to build up muscles in all the right places.

Can't help more as not even remotely a showing bod I'm afraid! Try posting a question on the main board too as that might get more people...

we breed and show welsh cobs, and yeah i agree with above, obviously i cnt give much as i havnt seen the C but some good exercise and schooling should do the trick, her conformation will come out better when she is more balanced and going in a outline. What i would say quickly is when in hand make sure your not forcing her head in the sky by holding tight as this will make her conformation choppy and she wont be reaching. Hold it relativly loose so that she can elongate her neck and so therefore reach for a stride and move forward. Under saddle, remember to rise high and slow to get her to ride forward into your hand but not leaning or pulling and bend at the elbow, raise your hands to pick her up and gently drive forward with seat, this will give her the power and drive forward to get that cob action! Good schooling ahould solve the problem:):)
