Bit strange but our vets can't help as they've never heard of the problem just wondering if anyone else has had the problem. I have a 5 year old JRT and a 9 month ESS, my terrier plucks the spaniels hair off her back so she's bald! She use to do it to our older dog but stopped. We've tried putting horrible tasting stuff on but doesn't make a difference. My vet thinks she's trying to mother her but its getting bad!!!

Maybe pica tendencies? I think training her out of it might be more effective, leaving a long line on her in the house so you can give her a gentle tug away when she starts and distract her with a game. Is she bored?

blimey, never heard of that before  I would use a mikki muzzle and if necessary a cage to separate them ? It sounds like the terrier might be struggling with some sort of mothering issue. You need to find the one thing that she hates the taste of, and try applying it to the other dog for a few minutes, let her try it, and maybe that will help ? My immediate thought is that nail biting stop lotion.

Which "horrible tasting stuff " have you tried?
The best one is Grannick's Bitter Apple and works 99% of teh time.
The anti nail bite stuff can be toxic to dogs.

I board a little yorki that does this to a westi, to the point her skin is pink and her hair very thin the the area due to this licking.
I think it starts are general preening/affection which seems to be very relaxing for both dogs when you sit an watch them and I then believe it becomes somewhat of an OCD, when the yorki does it I stop him immediately to the point he has to watch me and regard me otherwise I am on his case, however he can do it when unsupervised so In the instances they are unsupervised you could introduce a separation barrier (crate) or maybe put a tshirt/little doggy jumper on the dog thats getting licked to cover the area.

I also board 2 bassets and one licks the inner ears of the other (obs this is probably nice and sweaty) yack, but both the giver and the receiver seems very relaxed with this routine, so I believe it does give an element of relaxation/stress relief like chewing/sucking on a toy/blanket. Again I stop this behaviour but the owner just lets them get on with it.

I've tried Aloe Vera creams, Sudocrem, Savlon, Germaline, Sensitive sun cream ( as she now gets sun burnt). Being a typical terrier we've tried muzzling her and she just gets aggresive to the other dogs, we currently have a puppy training pen spread across the room so that they are together but not able to touch each other. She doesn't do it when were there its when left alone, she used to do it to our older dogs all the time whether we were there or not but she realised she didnt like being told off!

They will go in a cage its just the terrier gets really grumpy if she's in it and then the spaniel gets excited and winds her up then if we put the spaniel in she gets bored so when we let her out she goes mad and then that winds the terrier up!! The terrier is a typical JRT. grumpy! Such special dogs!!! When were not there, they are separated but wondered if anyone knew of anything to use to stop the little monster.
