I bought my new horse 6 weeks ago, she is out all day on grass, comes in at night to large haylage net and feed { alfa beet and mix}

She has a large bolder of Rock salt which she is munching threw with ease!!

she as eaten 2 in 6 weeks!!

Does anyone know why she is craving salt?? or do you think she is lacking something in the diet??

If so any ideas what i should give her??

Thankyou :D

<bump> for you.

It sometimes helps to something about the topic, e.g. 'Salt Craving?!?', in the title for more replies... I'm sure there will be people on here with ideas!

Apparently horses can safely consume half a pound of salt per week. As long as they have access to plenty of water it's ok. Not sure how much your licks weigh, but it sounds ok to me.

Is it one of the salt rocks on a rope? I have heard that some horses love them and can chomp through one very quickly

A normal block salt lick doesnt have the same appeal apparently so maybe swap it over and see what happens

We have three mares, one 30 year old 14.3 cob, who rarely touches hers, one 15.3 appy 16 year old who quite enjoys a lick every now and again, a 16hh westphalian cold blood 20 year old, who thinks hers is a lolly which must be licked every evening after her tea of straw chaff. They all have the same access to grazing, out 23/7 at this time of year, but all have different 'wants' for the salt lick. I can't see a big problem with your horse, except the expense :)
