Hi guys

I've had a crap morning and its only 9.15!!!

I've picked up some work this weekend at used car sales room on reception - so I have sacrificed my weekend as I really need some new wellies !! Anywho - the point is I've had my in foal mare back from stud a week now shes been living out all summer but was a little skinny when I got her back so I kept her in for a week to feed her up a bit and to get used to her new field etc with the intention of her living out rugged up for the winter ... SO My mum is in Hospital and I've got this work so last night I thought ok maybe I should try leaving her out now , She is in a small paddock surrounded with other small paddocks all with horses living out in them and she has been settled in the day.

Sooo ... I worried all night about my girl crossing my fingers only to find when I get to the farm that 2 of the other horses have broken out in the night and have been running up and down her paddock fence ! She was drenched with sweat and clearly tense !!! I've brought her in put a cooler on and left her with a big haynet but I'm worried about the baby - do you think the stress could harm it should ? Should I try and turn her out again tonight (not liking this idea very much) The 2 escapees have trashed their gate so will be going in the field behind her til its fixed !

I don't think it helps that I'm worried about my Mum either . just tell me to shut up if I'm being soft

RUBBISH

Don't think the stress will hurt the baby, tbh, horses in the wild gallop like oozits all night and day sometimes, and the preggers ones join in - how far along is she?
Maybe it's the escapees who should stay in until their gate's fixed, and she should go out!

I always fret about the mares but, whatever will be, they always seem to turn out ok. I'm sure your mare will be fine. Do you use electric fencing to separate them? They seem to appreciate the shock and keep away. Is she in with anyone else? It will always be stressful if she is on her own.

Not very up on breeding, maybe ask the question in Breeding?

As SA says, horses run in the wild and get stressed, so hopefully their systems are hardwired to cope to a great extent.

Sorry to hear your Mum is not so well. Hugs to all.

Yeah your right ! Not sure that a newbie should be putting her foot down tho - rock the boat and all that !

Shes only 8 weeks and lost 1 earlier in the year but it was twins.

Thanks for your help

Oh, OK, well, if she's only 8 weeks, I think I'd keep her in overnight and keep an eye on her, if she's not going to get stressed being kept in, make sure she has plenty of hay and a good nap, and then try again tomorrow.
Like people, though, if mares *do* lose foals very early in pregnancy, despite the temptation to put it down to circumstances, it's usually just that it was going to happen.
Keep your eye on her, I'm she'll be fine.

OH has just been and checked on her! and she has chilled out now- farmer came out to check she was ok and has offered us a different field for the time being next to his house so he can keep an eye on her and has replaced the broken gate to the other field already this morning! (???? Better service from a potatoe farmer than any of the past "Horsey" YO I have experianced!!!!!) going to leave her in tonight and try again in the week !

My instructor breeds. She said that if there's chance of mares losing foals, they are at high risk within the first 45 days. After that, the odds are less.

I wouldn't worry too much, easy for me to say I know

A livery in my herd bred last year, and her mare stayed in the herd of 8 horses all the way through her pregnancy, even to the last day! She lived her out nearly the whole time, just brought her in at night 2 weeks prior to her due date!

All our herd stampede round like looney's all of the time. The mare joined in and was fine, and she threw out a very healthy filly too xx
