can anyone reasure me that my pony will come right please - story so far she has been lame for over a month had xrays last week and she has artritis in front paston - vet said ride every day with bute for 2 weeks only in walk then start to do faster work gradually - she is now on cortaflex devils claw cider vineger and is having shoes that raise her heals on saturday as per vets instructions. the vet has said that she hopes that she will come sound but that if she isnt after another month then i should think about sending her back (shes on loan) the thing is i really like her, but want to do pleasure rides up to 20 miles once a month - does anyone else have any horse with the same problem and can you tell me if all is well with them please - good or bad thanks x
 
Give it some time. My last loan mare was off lame with an 'undiagnosed' slight lameness for 7 months then one day came sound. She had scans, x-rays etc but we never got to the bottom of it. It was frustrating but she was the perfect schoolmistress who I learned alot on so it was worth the effort though most thought I was mad.
So wait and see but, as you say, she is on loan so if the rides are what you really want to do there is no point in haviong someone else's lame horse.
 
You've done all you can.....you've had the vet out, you've done as the vet wants...so now all you can do it wait to see if it all works.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear but now it's just down to giving it time. Good Luck

How old is she?

My 23 year old horse had arthritis/ringbone/sidebone and hunted till he was 20. I retired him two years ago because I could no longer keep him sound while in work, but he is happy in the field (see pic!).

However, I kept him going for years using EquiFlex www.vetvits.co.uk , which I found better for him that cortaflex, and a lot cheaper too. I also used magnetic pastern wraps on him for a few hours a day, which seemed to help.
 
she is just 15 - no miles on clock - i have thought about pastern wraps - can you give me info on them please price etc. - thanks for that it gives me a bit of hope xx

I bought a pair from ebay for £22 as my boy has arthritis of the coffin joint and spent most of last year lame. He is only 12 and I was thinking of having to retire him earlier in the year as his lameness was getting more and more frequent.
I thought I'd give it one last go and managed to get the farrier to speak to the vet about the lameness/joint issue to see if there was anything they could do between them. They shaped his front feet so that it took pressure off the joint.
I don't know if it has been what they did, the magnetic wraps or the buteless but he is sound (touch wood) * runs to hug the nearest tree

* It has all been trial and error and I am aware that one day he will not come sound again but for now we are just extremely careful when the ground is hard and he can only jump on a good all weather surface. He is on Newmarket joint supplement and Buteless.

Search for as much info as poss and have a read about magnatherapy to see if it might help.

I got mine on ebay too, I think they were about £20, and well worth it. There are some ads in H&H too, probably more expensive ones though.

Thinking about it, my oh is a farrier and he put on front shoes with two clips for more support (NOT natural balance), took the toes back and gradually raised the heels that way. Taking the toes back on your horse might really help her if they have become too long.
 
I would sugest that you buy a bag of Linseed from Simple Systems as this helps to reduce inflamation and increase mobility in the joint.

Sorry - but in Juno's case, don't think linseed would be appropriate as the last thing she needs is fattening up.

I know you are worried - but you will have to be patient! If you stick to the vet's regime with no schooling or lunging and ride her out gently and consistently, then after a month or so you can make a decision. I know you want to do the rides and I know you really like Juno as well - so it is a tough one.
 
Malibu, I hope you get lots more years out of your horse - like you I wasn't sure if it was the shoeing/magnetic wraps/equiflex or whatever, as long as he was sound and happy. I only retired him after he chipped a sidebone and when he occasionally feels it, it's like your ankle giving way, which isn't safe really. Best of luck with yours.

thanks very much for the replies - i think i will get some magnetic wraps - as you all seem to think they may help and im all for trying anything to give her a fair chance - she walked down our high road yeaterday - over the bridge over the duel carriage way and past all the road works with out a look - i will be hard pushed to find another like her - little darling xxx
