can anyone reccomend a good fly repellent

Have a look in Stable Yard, the top thread is home made fly spray recipes. I've been using these for a couple of years and they are easily as good as most things in the shops - and much cheaper

This is the only one that works on my eventer who goes MAD
SUPER PLUS REPELLENT,they also make a cream that you can smear on the face and around the eyes ....

deosect is a good fly repellant but also good to keep any lice etc away
