Hi All, I have spent a lot of money on calmers in the past which have either not worked or have not been very palatable so the horse has just left the feed with it in.

Can anyone recommend an effective calmer, I'm not too worried about the money as long as it actually works, although I would prefer to buy a powder type supplement that I could put in feed and it would last a while before I had to buy another. Not keen on using those oxy shot type things.

Thanks :) :)

Have you tried magnesium? If you put this into the search function on here you will find loads of threads on it and its benefits!
A lot of grazing is short of magnesium so it may help, also most calmers have magnesium in them!

Calmers are tricky, as what works for one horse won't work for another - so it's a bit trial & error until you find the right thing, unfortunately!
I was also going to suggest Topspec's calmer as I've tried it on a few horses in the past and it's definitely the one which has been most effective - it settled them down and took the edge off without turning them into seaside donkeys. The Global Herbs calmers are good too, in my experience x

Work. Without being at all flippant or facetious this is what works best for my sharp quirky horse - that and a diet based on as much fibre and as little sugar as possible.

My mum swears by nupafeed.
I think it's a placebo though. I also think the best calmer is good management :).

Magnesium only works as a calmer if your horse if mag. deficient.

Have a look at the Equifeast site. They have different strengths of calmers and some are calcium rather than mag. based. They are very helpful if you ring them for advice and will work with you to find the right "blend". They follow up to make sure you are happy with your calmer and will suggest additional ingredients, initially free of charge, until you get the right result.

I think you need to go back to ybe begining.
Look at the horse as a whole.
Why do you think it needs a calmer?

A change in management, feed. Handling could "solve" the problem.

Calmers just mask a symptom. Sometimes they don't work!
I don't believe they are needed.

I know one; it's called "less feed/more work". Try that and see how you get on.

Helpful if they aren't being fed ;)

Try valerian if you aren't competing or Zylkene Equine

Many calmers are magnesium based so if straight mag ox doesn't work it's likly most of the others won't unless they have something else in :) Above 2 work on my idiot for box rest

Magnesium only works if your horse is lacking in it . Also some horse are worse on just magnesium. I tried it my horse was more spooky a real twit so gave it a way, back on magic 95% better.

Can anyone suggest something to relax my daughters pony. Some small issues have arose to make my daughter lose confidence, her pony has been a star and helped no end but now is starting to act either nervous or cheeky not really sure. She is backing off fences or springing out the side. It's unlike her they have won no end in past. Would a calmer help them to rebond and which one?

Yes I have considered all options and had new saddle fitted last year and have regular back check and teeth being done on Friday, tbh the teeth are overdue, would that really make much difference?

Agree with paulineh yes overdue teeth can make a difference. Also my daughter had a wobble so we just went off and did some fun rides and played About at home - as her pony has been there done that in the past - but there's nothing to prove I feel it's not about who can jump the highest fastest anymore but if my daughter is enjoying herself that's the main thing . So try a change of scene with pony might help
