A friend's daughter would like to learn to ride and I think would benefit from proper tuition as she is quite nervous. Can anyone recommend a decent riding school with a variety of horses which might suit? She is based in Cambridge but happy to travel if need be.

i looked for a decent riding school a couple of years back when i was between horses - best i could find within travelling was Hallingbury Hall, down M11 nr Stanstead. Indoor school, outdoor menages and absolutley loads of horses. depends how far she is prepared to travel.

If it's for a nervous child, what about this place:

I've known a few people whose daughters used to go there, and having been past whilst lessons were going on, they looked to be having fun on very safe, well looking ponies

I would very strongly recommend that you warn them off Bridge farm in Cottenham

Let's not be bitchy about beckbrook thank you, it definitely had it's faults when it was running as a riding school-and fair enough it still does now as a livery-however it does me very well and I learnt a hell of a lot when I had lessons there and it does my girl very nicely as a livery now.

I don't know how old the daughter is and you do mention horses rather than ponies, but Sharon Newbound at Hilltop Equestrian Centre in Yelling is very good and close to Cambridge itself. There was no-one more nervous than me when I first went there, believe you me! She is a dressage trainer as well.

Is that Cambridge UK? do they have a website?

I too would have to recommend Hill Top EC and Sharon Newbound, who is an excellent instructor.

The facilities are not perfect but the horses are good quality schoolmasters and they are very hot on safety too.

Sawston Riding School- nice quiet ponies and horses, do RDA so are good for nervous riders, but some more buzzy ones too, all well schooled.

I think Sharon herself would admit to wanting new stable blocks for years, but you can see for yourself if you visit that all the horses are very well looked after which is what counts. I had my own horse there on working livery a while back. She is a very patient and quiet teacher and she doesn't miss anything in your riding!

Can recommend Northbrook Equestrian Centre near Huntingdon

New owners took over around 2 years ago and made good changes

They have a website
