I have a black lab who is approaching 9 years old she is not really showing her age apart from being very stiff when she has come out of her dog bed! its just a normal plastic dog bed and she has a double duvet to lie on!
She has been diagnosed with arthritis in her hips!

Any recommendations on a good extremley comfy dog bed would be much appreciated!

Also any info if your dog has arthritis do you do anything to its diet or anything else to help your dog?

thanks

Apart from plenty blankets can't recommend any beds.

As for helping the stiffness, Devils Claw (bought in health food stores) worked wonders on our old lab.

We changed our arthritic old lab's bed from a plastic one to a thick square duvet style one which was shaped a bit like a nest, so that she could lie flat out rather than curling up which seemed to make her more stiff. We also got her a magnetic collar which seemed to help. Would also second Devils Claw as an anti-inflammatory.

My demented Dalmatian has a king size quilt folded in half length ways then folded in three length ways, if you can picture that! So he end ups a bit like the princess and the pea!!!! He won't accept anything else to sleep on unless its my bed and he's well trained all I have do is shout "Mummy needs a cuddle" and he jumps on the bed and snuggles down next to me then I sleep like a log!!!

He also has glucosamine and chondroitin tablets every day - approx £67 for 120 tablets which for my dog started off at three a day and now he'd down to one a day.

He's 11 years old and still running round like a spring chicken except at 5.30am walkies time when I have to drag him off his bed!!!!

My dogs have the bed, the sofa or if it gets cramped (because I want to sit down too!) I made a bed out of a double duvet folded into quarter and my mum made 2 mini duvet covers with poppers and everything. This is very snuggly.

I think Tia can confirm this but she uses green lipped mussels from Tescos (?) for arthritis and swears by it. I think you can get an extract from health food shops too but not sure how much you use.

I bought my dog bed from Mark Todd. My English Springer loves it has it is very cushioned with a waterproof cover inside for those really excitable moments!. The detachable cover is washable and is hard wearing as its made from the same material as some of their rugs.

He is taking a joint mobility supplement (following a horrible accident with a horse) and its contains glucosamine, msm, omega 3 fatty acids, chondontrin and other minerals, I buy mine from by local equestrian shop they cost £20 for 60 tablets which are taken depending on weight. My spinger is on half a tablet a day

Try a flat dog bed such as a sofa bed with an open front that is easy to get in and out of e.g.

Get a larger size than you think you need as then she can stretch out fully front and back legs when she wants. It's definitely harder for arthriticky dogs to uncurl themselves from small baskets.

I'm sure your dog would love your bed but Labs are a bit heavy to lift (-though you can get ramps if your dog would use one) especially if she gets up in the night. If you have futon it might work. A divan is tougher.

If you are feeling flush try a flectabed cushion (not really a stand alone bed though) which reflects body heat

Don't forget that a raised feeding station for food/water may help, if you don't already use one, especially if your dog shows any sign of neck problems.

Best wishes for comfy nights all around.

My old Greyhound either has a massive cushioned dog bed with a sleeping bag and picnic type blankets (she can lie in this with minimal curling up) or she sleeps on her own sofa with cushions!!

She can lie on this and strech out and she is always very comfy on here. Until recently she didn't sleep on the sofa at night but she has decided that she won't walk on the tiled kitchen floor so we have to leave the doors open into the study so she can sleep on her sofa!!

If you have an old sofa......let the dog have it, we have found it the best thing for our girl!!
