....to help me find my first horse. I’m in the East Midlands area but would look nationwide. Have shared/loaned many over years and owned youngsters and ponies (currently own a youngster but sadly she’s not going to make the height and is too green for what I need her for) ...so after 30 years I’m finally looking to buy my own big riding horsey In the coming months! I’m the type to go in with rose tinted glasses and so thinking an agent might be a wise option. Has anyone done this before and can recommend any? Thank you ☺️ ?

Your regular instructor is the best option. Agents are there to sell you something. You need someone who knows you - knows your riding ability inside out and knows horses.

If you have a youngster you now think is too green you do need some experienced help. The instructor who has worked alongside you throughout is the best placed.

If you don’t have much of a network (and being new to the horse world means you might not) there are some out there but it’s been too long since I looked to recommend one. A reputable dealer might be a good place to start so look on the dodgy dealers Facebook page. But local instructors or pony club might be a better bet, def better to use someone who doesn’t have a vested interest.

Thanks all. I’ve asked my riding instructor who knows me fairly well and offered to pay her to come with me to view but she seemed reluctant tbh. I know she’s very busy atm unfortunately. She said to send her any videos of potentials and not to use dealers or buy an arab/tb type (Arabs are my favoured breed as I’ve had a couple on part loan before). I’m fine with spooky and green horses but would prefer something a little more experienced so I can do more. I’m on a couple of the dodgy dealer fb groups but will look for others. Unfortunately I’m new to my area too so that doesn’t help. I’m thinking of advertising for an experienced person to help me view when the time comes. I will keep searching, thank you ?
