It needs to have the following criteria;

Comfortable for longer wear, lying down, etc
Not bulky
Suitable for hot European weather
has a handle on top for lifting
wouldn't swamp a dachshund

The Julius ones are too bulky and look like the dog could slip out if lifted. It's for lifting on and off a boat so must be secure but comfortable as he would need to wear it while at sea if it's rough. The Ruffwear ones also have too much coverage so would be too hot, and I have read they aren't suitable for longer wear.

Any suggestions?

Julius K9 do an IDC belt harness, which doesn't have the 'saddle' the other models so. You can attach a chest plate if you need to.

I did see the other day that Julius K9 now do a harness that is a life vest (good for on a boat) with a handle on the top of it.

I use the standard Julius k9 IDC ones of my Dalmatians and the belt harness on my Spaniels, not had any issue with them slipping out of them and I can lift them into the car with it on.
