I am exhausted in looking at horseboxes ? I am after a nice wagon to maybe carry 3, 1 horse 2 ponies, but would be mainly used for the one horse 16.2, would like living but nothing fancy, you know somewhere to sit in between classes have a cup of tea, read the paper ?
Everywhere I have looked people are wanting silly money or everything else is a bag of s**t, I dont want a oakley or anything just something reliable, im in west yorks willing to travel but not thousands of miles, does anyone know of anything ?

No disrespect but with a 5K budget for one you will only get rubbish.

The nice ones cost alot more than that! You might come across a really old reliable one for that budget, but for £5k if it looks nice there's something up with it.

Im not bothered about it looking nice ? just want something reliable ?

TBH at that price these days you are looking at sheds only. I paid £2500 4 years ago for a first lorry but I knew what I was looking at and getting into. It looked rubbish but the basic mechanicals and body were sound.

At this price the maintenance each year could well be £1k plus to keep it on the road.

im going to have some trouble selling mine then. its a bit tatty looking but it is an F reg. i spent nearly a grand to get it through its MOT which was all general wear and tear stuff.the only snag with mine is it is going to need a new floor in the not to distant future.( i havnt actually taken the mats up but it is starting to rot in one corner by the ramp.) and im not asking anywhere near 5k.people are going to think its a heap of crap when they see what im asking and wont bother even looking at it ,when in fact its a reliable lorry which doesnt have a job anymore as new horse wont stay on it,she doesnt get the turning sideways concept so i bought a trailer.

As has been said.... for £5000 you will be looking at very old & very tired lorries. When they get old they start to get very expensive to run, there is always something that needs replacing, assuming you can still get the parts. At £5k you wouldn't get a trailer & 4x4 so it is unlikely you will get a reliable lorry....sorry....keep saving?

Id agree with Ottinmeg, i have a great reliable ford E reg lorry, its in good condition, well looked after and is has been everywhere with no major issues. The guy who looks after it says its in great order and better than some of the newer lorries he looks after, last year it cost me £200 to prepare its for its plating.

Sometimes, there are genuine sales of older lorries. I am contemplating selling mine (just in process of buying a house so need the ££), but its not big enough for what you need and i am a little bit too far away

a bit sweeping dont you think???

i sold my leyland daf 7.5T on a G plate with day living, with running water, little hob, etc, 3 horse, rubber mtting, padded partition, just before christmas it was coachbuilt, not a horrid conversion, 12 months plate/2 months tax, for 5.2k.

it's out and about every weekend.......

it's folk who THINK their 15 yr old heap of cr@p is worth 10k that mess up the market...

Ive got my little lorry for sale for 4.5k it would and has taken 1 16.2hh and 2 14hh.
It is old but reliable and looks ok. took the grand total of £80 to pass its test.

Just because it is old doesnt mean it is a heap of junk

hi , have pm'd you as a friend mentioned recently they may upgrade theirs , older wagon but very tidy & reliable , would be a good buy on a tight budget imo

I disagree totally with thse who say you can't get anything for less than £5k!! I bought mine for less than that, and it has been fantastic. It looks fine - yes it is old but tidy paintjob, mechanically sound. We regularly do 100+ mile round trips, the living is comfortable and smart, horses travel nicely.
I think the key is to find the RIGHT lorry. I looked at plenty before buying and had 3 vetted - 2 failed and the third one passed, I bought it on the spot. I used the guy who advertises in H&H to do the veting and he said it was a good buy for my budget.
Sadly I will have to sell mine in the autumn as I can't really justify running it to travel 1 15hh arab, as OH's mare has had to be retired to stud due to an injury. So if you are stil looking then OP mine sounds like exactly what you are looking for!

There are plenty of boxes for sale at that sort of price, but they aren't new, they aren't posh and they mostly have interstellar mileage. When I look for one, i will be solely concerned with mechanical soundness and reliability, not how scruffy it looks.

I bought mine years ago for £3200 - old V reg Bedford 3 horse with basic tack area and a couple of cupboards.

I've had it 14 years and it's cost no more that £1k in that time in repairs - she's tatty but does the job.

I'm just about to upgrade the chassis to an M plate but the only reason for that is because we have got it very cheap from a client of my dad's who was about to write it off through the books if it wasn't for that Betty Bedford would keep on going

when she was MOT'd last year the guys were amazed how clean she was for her age and said she was in better nick than alot of newer lorries - less to go wrong I suppose.

to advertise her she'd not be worth more than the value of the box

They are out there but it's a devil to find them

I bought my Cargo (D plate) for 6k 2 years ago.
It only had 145,00k on the clock as had been a horsebox most of its life. It was tatty as hell but mechanically sound (ish) with 12 months test. Will carry 2 horses/3 ponies (within weight) but space for 3 full size horses.
Living was old but very servicable
This is what it looked like back then.

I immediately replaced the floor (£200) and have also replaced the starter motor (£75) and complete exhaust system (£125). So far it has been totally reliable and I've done about 15,000 miles in it (yes it does get used a lot).
Dressage diva OH didn't like it looking tatty so I also resprayed it (£800) but with very expensive metalic 2 pack paint and lacquer. Could have done it for £300.
Now looks like this

Keep in mind I did all the work myself so would have cost considerably more.
If you can wait a couple of years it will be up for sale

I totally disagree!! Ok i paid £5.5 but certainly not rubbish! - lovely box, with brand new living and horse section, chassis wont last beyond 5 years or more as its old but box section could easily go on for years and be fitted to another chassis.

Plated, legal, takes 2-3, has all the toys including microwave, shower,tv etc, drives beautifully, and not in bad nick outside either!! Shop around and be prepared to wait for the right thing.

Also dont be afraid to make an offer, they can only say no!!!

Mine is a Mercedes called "Melissa"!!!! xx

Jeanette

To JM07 - Maybe a sweeping comment but when I looked round at lorries I couldnt find anything decent under £15k
I have seen the 5K lorries and as Jeanettethree said herself - they all "seem to bags of s**t
There may be some cheaper lorries but that need work doing and are almost impossible to find.
