Last night while grooming Hattie for a hack, I noticed that she had all bot eggs down the insides of her front legs and on her shoulders. She must have gotten them sometime during the day as I schooled her in the morning and there wasn't any then. In the 2 years I've had her and been down my field, she's never gotten any either so goodness knows how she got them all of a sudden.

Anyways, shaved them off with the bot knife but there were some stubborn ones that I had to get off with my finger nails. When I got home, I grabbed a nectarine and started eating it and I realized that I forgot to wash my hands.

If I had a bot egg under my nails and touched my mouth while at the stable (sometimes I bite my nails) or one came off on the nectarine, could a bot egg hatch in me???!!!

I just googled this : On rare occasions, bots can invade the oral tissue of humans. The small larvae may burrow behind the lips or inner cheek and cause an uncomfortable sensation. They are unable to develop in humans so the small larvae will die within a few days. For example, rubbing or petting an area where bot eggs are attached on a horse can result in larvae on the hands and subsequent transfer to the person's mouth.

I have just had to be rescued from a virus attack on my PC for trying to check my answer! It's what I thought - unlikely that any UK bot fly larva could survive in a human host but in the tropics, there definitely are. Plenty of gross videos to back this up...

look at 'this morning now', its on TV!!!

A bot fly lived in this mans head and said its quite common as they are related to mosquitos or something... Not sure about its aggs though, eurghhh making me itchy!
