I moved my arthritic horse onto danilon a couple of weeks ago as it is suppose to be kinder on their system etc as he was on a bute every day. But since putting him on the danilon he seems to be resting his leg more but when he was on the bute he seemed to be alot better.
Is it possible that the danilon isn't as effective for him?

The active ingredient in Danilon reverts to the same chemical ingredient (phenybutazone) in Equipalazone when it hits the stomach of the horse. The main difference is the danilon contains alot more sugar encapsulating the drug than Equipalazone so some fussy horses eat it more readily. There is no evidence that Danilon is kinder to stomachs (marketing speil that vets sadly believed) and it is as effective than Equipalazone. If your horse is better on Equipalazone and eats it no problems then I'd save your pennies and move back.

can you explain please, if bure and danalon do the same job chemically and one is as good as the other. but danalon is more paletable, the why do you advise to go back to danalon. is it the fact that danalon is a fiew pence more to buy.
i honestly dont know, but i have seen mares with bute/danalon[it was bute, but isuppose either would be the same]withdrawal , i have also seen foals born bute dependant
this is where the mare had a foot prob, and was on long term bute. i expect any druds/chemicals should be kept to a minimum. mainly as horses gut/stomach does,nt deal well with them. and can cause the laminitis that caused the pain in the first place. these are just my opinions, fact is i dont really know, but i cant help wonder

I have always been led to believe that bute is absorbed through the stomach and gut walls and that danillion is broken down in the liver, which is why it is kinder on the stomach. Our vets have quite a differance in price for the danillion - sold as 60's and the bute - sold in 100's. My girl had gastric ulcers - the vets said it was the long term bute that caused it - that cost me £100's in treatment.
