Ill pony on our yard collapsed outside his stable tonight. Owner had just administered some oral antibiotics via a syringe - pony fell in a heap on the floor about a minute later. He fell very hard on his back and couldn't get up (i wasn’t here to see this - i arrived about 30mins later) - owner thought that KICKING him would help him to get back up! (You know, like how you kick a person when they faint!!!) Anyway, it didn’t work and pony was down for about 20 minutes. Owner didn’t want to get a vet at first, but did in the end. Pony got up 2 minutes before vet arrived (typical)!

Vet reckons pony chocked on the anti-b's, fainted, landed hard on his back, hurt it and couldn’t get up. As far as i know, there was no sign of any chokey symptoms. Would you say this sounded correct?? I'm doubtful, but she's the vet!

Pony was practically carried into his stable and looks as if he's brain damaged - VERY uncoordinated and wobbly. Also banged his eye, which is bleeding and swollen.

I've never witnessed choke before, so have no idea if it can cause a horse to collapse in such a short space of time. Any ideas??

Poor boy's been in the wars lately.

I would of thought it sounds more like it had a sudden reaction to the AB's rather than he choked and fainted. Sounds very strange to me.

i once fed my horse a sample of a ready grass type product.... i fed it dry as i thought you normall would, and my horse had this type of reaction, although not as extreme. He started chocking, and then got down and closed his eyes.... didn't get up for about 45 secs (wasn't rolling etc etc). It didn'tl ast long enough for the vet to be there as it was happening, as in all the ordeal only lasted about 5 mins. Was very strange to watch, but vet did say it was choke.
Needless to say he's never had anything like ready grass again, and it has never happened since. It was the most frightening time of my life! He was totally fine when we went back to yard to check him an hour later!

I wouldn't think pony could react that quickly unless it was injected....?

choke you usually see stuff coming back through coughing out of mouth and nostrils, real choke? sounds more like major allergic reaction to be honest, I would be mindful of what antibiotics it has in future, is it due to have more of the same? Would defo be asking for second opinion on that one, unless she was a bit jolly shoving AB's down its neck and for some reason its other tube was open into the lungs? Dunno, but doesnt sound at all like typical choke symptoms.

That's what i thought, but he's been on these anti-b's (penicillin) for a while now.

Vet said it could have just been blasted down his airway, but i'd have thought it would have taken longer for him to actually collapse - it all happened really fast.
These owners & this vet stress me out! It's not even my pony!!

Are these the same people who's horse had suspected peritonitis? Grrrrrrrr.

The lack of coordination could well be concussion Lou. Cant help as for the reason, unless it's the 'underlying' problem that the vet and owners cant seem to sort out.

I once inhaled a load of antibiotics at work - never did me any harm

. I think the people on your yard need some lessons in horse care!
Is Doll at her new place yet?

Yep, same pony!

He was turned out for a few hours today and seemed ok, but then this.

I've never seen such a disabled horse (albeit, temporary (hopefully)) - it's quite distressing to see (for everyone but the owners!)

He's still got MEGA diarrhoea and is much quieter than he should be, but his appetite has improved. It's all very confusing!!

Lol! we're all alright apart from the owners of this pony!!

Yep, Doll's moved house! She's being an Angel apparently! Loving their colt though - she wants his babies! They love her there - i cant believe how well-behaved she's been. She's got a proper little attitude with ME!

How are yours? x

Ahh, spending all that time with Apollo has made her want some babies!!! Sorry! The merry men are all ok thanks! Apollo has calmed down a lot - I think the new yard has a lot more going on which keeps him occupied. Will be saying goodbye to Mickey soon, I'm not looking forward to that. But I guess it'll be good for me to move on. I'm going insane trying to get him out of donkey mode.

I hope this horse recovers. How old did you say it was? x

Could it be that he is allergic to the penicillin?

My chestnut horse's sire died at stud after being treated with penicillin for a cut on his face!

Hence my vet never gives my horse penicillin but uses an alternative instead.

Certainly have heard about horses having extreme reactions to it & collapsing etc.
