Hi All,

Just trying to find an answer to the above. I turned my horse out into one of the paddocks at our yard yesterday and noticed he ran straight to the end by the treeline and started eating the Catkins off of the ground - wasnt bothered by the grass, but seemed to love the Catkins.

Moved him out of there as soon as i saw what he was eating as im not sure if they are poisonous to horses??

Unfortunately i've got no idea what type of trees they are that are producing them (except for they are very large trees) - will have to ask incase that depends on if they can eat them or not!

Any ideas?

TIA :)

Quite a lot of tress and shrubs produce catkins I'm afraid - and that is just assuming you are in the UK and not elsewhere! None of the common catkin bearing trees / shrubs in the UK are poisonous. But there could be some ornamentals or plants outside the UK which are.

Hi Shay,

Thanks for your reply. I am in the UK so hopefully that should mean that hes not going to do any harm to himself if he does eat them. He did seem to rather enjoy them until I realise he wasnt eating the grass, and instead the catkins and moved him... then again hes also been known to eat sticks so who knows!

Wont worry too much about them in that case!

:)

I do hope not :) :)

If they are hazel trees or some sort of willow then mine have a jolly good munch on the whole trees not just the catkins (fruit not username!!)
