As title really, my friend had her veteran pony put down last night (she was 37), she'd just gone downhill. After she'd gone lots or creamy pus type stuff came out of her vulva. Nothing had been evident before that xx

Any mare can get an infection in the uterus - although it is uncommon in mares that are not breeding. However, I would rather think that the discharge you saw might have been the result of urine pooling in the vaginal vault (the urine goes really thick and creamy and quite YUK!) This is a problem you see in some mares who have had foaling difficulties - but could equally happen in an old mare as everything drops!

Yes definately - they are often the result of foaling problems, or the wrong angle for the vulva allowing dung to enter. Also can develop from mares that windsuck as they work - air being sucked into the vulva bringing dirt in with it.

Many mares in racing have a 'Caslick' operation, where the edges of the vulva are cut and sewn together leaving only a small opening to allow urine out. If in foal this is opened up again a week or so before due date.

My Clydie mare is caslicked as the angle of her vulva is not too good.

yes they can. we had a mare at work with a massive infection in her womb, she should have been dead from septecemia(sp) but somehow she didnt show any signs! other than smelly urine ( we thought it was a season) it wasnt untill she had her tail washed and it was covered in thick gak, vet came out straight away and it went from there. she had a black bucket of saline pumped in and they got a tubtrug of saline and pus back out. she was flushed every day for 7 days and long term anti biotics and she is fine. she has had problems with being covered as she has a dipped uterus.
