my horse is an ex racer. he damaged a tendon racing over hurdles and was taken off the racecourse on 3 legs. he had 12 months off - 6 months of which was box rest. He was then walked in hand, and then walked out and after 12 months was deemed sound. I bought him and over 12 months have hacked him, taken him on pleasure rides, started to compete at dressage and now starting his jumping work. He is completely sound, I have had him checked out by the vets and been told his tendon is now better than new - it is stronger, tougher and is not likely to ever give me a problem again. I hope to start eventing him next year. You can contact www.Tendonworks.com and sound them out about the prognosis on tendon injuries, they are the experts
Team did his SDFT in 1997 in Ireland. He was sold and came to iEngland (was not fired) Once here, he raced from 1998 to 2006 in point to point, national hunt and hunter chases.
Sadley he did his SDFT on the other leg this may so is out of action for a short time now.
It depends from horse to horse and recovery rate, how bad the injury was and treatment etc....
My ex racer who retired through tendon issues was jumping fine when he was sold.
However a horse on my yard has been declared unfit to jump even when fully recovered.
It just depends I think.
Hope it helps.
She had 3 months box rest and about 2 years off, including colic surgery and a foal in that time. Went on to have 3 more foals, do LDR and hunted hard for 4 seasons. We didn't do jumping though. Never a days work related lameness (or colic) in the 12 years she was with me after her injury.
I imagine it all depends on the injury though and what work you intend doing afterwards.
