Can horses sense each other?

Bit of an odd question I know....

I am moving to a private yard from livery, I have two Shetlands and a section D. Originally I was going with someone else with a big pony but she is looking like she's dropping out, I'm not fussed as for me the yard is just perfect!

My only worry is, the Shetlands share a stable and for the time being will have a normal size door, just in case they get stressy and jump out. Do you think my Welsh will know they are there even if he can't see them over a door? I imagine it's no different than having a neighbor that is haynet obsessed and doesn't look out much, but can they sense each other in the next stable without seeing each other?

Most likely he will know. But depends how far away they are. Why not show him by taking him up to the stable after they are inside

They are right next door. They are at our current yard too. I will definitely show him them, fingers crossed!

I would say he will know they are there, when out hacking, mine seems to know there are new horses in the field about a mile away!
I don't have an experience of shetlands, but could you put a few brezeblocks or large bricks for them to step their front feet onto to look out (if your not allowed to change the door) probaby quite unpractical when actually using the door though!
Good luck with the new yard : )

I don't know if they can sense each other - but they can hear and smell. He will definitely know they are there.

He will be able to sense they are there, but he won't be able to visually communicate with them, which is something horses do a lot in their day to day life, checking all is OK etc.
As someone said perhaps you can put a block in so Shetland's can step up to look out of door and communicate?

Thanks everyone :)

Me and the owner of the new yard are keen to change the door to a smaller one, I just want to give them some time to settle before changing it in case they decide to escape!
