Can i cry? - ebay related..

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but can you do a listing to sell or swap on ebay? I have had a think and would rather do a swap with my saddle but not sure where I can list the item?

I sold a saddle on Ebay, put up loads of pictures. It was a lovely saddle and although it was about 14 years old I had always kept it in great condition, even through the past couple of years when I hadn't used it as it was too small. There was slight wear on the knee rolls and the pommel from where I ride in jeans at home and I described and posted pics this in the listing. I got about £80 for it if I remember right. Anyway sent the saddle and didn't think much more about it untill two weeks later when I got a message from Paypal claiming that the buyer wanted her money back as the saddle was dangerous.... I was shocked, told Ebay about the minor faults but agreed to refund her the money to keep the peace!
The saddle arrived back to me with a broken tree ... someone had basically bent the saddle back (or a horse had rolled over on it) and it came to me in two halfs. I was so disgusted. I also sold a Sky+ HD box and got a complaint one month later saying that it didn't work... funny how you were delighted with it for the first month!!!!
I will never sell anything on Ebay again!

I sometimes watch a few items so maybe they're looking at more than one saddle on there? I also sometimes watch and then forget about them!

I always list on the weekends and make sure it ends near the end of the week. Don't do one of the long listing periods either - go for 5 or 7 days. I never bother with listings that have a bijillion days left on them!

I also had a problem of someone not paying. At christmas my mum wanted to sell a perfume set she'd never used. Sold it to this woman for about £50, who didn't pay and finally contacted me after a week to say she couldn't afford it. Was too late to relist as it was too close to christmas (we were going for people wanting presents). I now got ebay involved asap if I don't receive anything within a couple of days.

If youve got two other saddles, are they in good condition? You might be able to part Ex them with your local tack shop which get 2nd hand saddles in? x

Isnt it something like 30% commission with them though?

Thing is, by the time you've paid eBay listing fees, extra photo fees, final value fees and then PayPal fees, that's probably 15-20% anyway. Let alone having to deal with all the bidder questions, risk buyer disputes, having to re-list them or not even selling at all.

A company local to us offers a saddle selling service at 30% commission too. Personally, I'd rather forego the difference & not have the hassle, stress & effort myself :)

How about Preloved / Freeads as a cheaper option?

ETA just realised your auctions ended yesterday, doh! Did they sell? :)

I quite often watch items that I have no intention of buying - but I am doing research because either have something similar to sell or I want to buy at some point but am being very fussy.

Funnily enough I have two saddles on there at the moment and both are going to sell in about 3 hours! Sorry!

Not sure if this is of any help to you, but if you know what saddle you want, Julia Garrett will PX second hand saddles against the cost of a saddle from her, so she might be worth a call? I PXd a GP against a second hand albion from her...

A quick Ebay tip is to bite the bullet and put on a ridiculously low opening bid, like 99p. I know it feels counter-intuitive when you're selling a high priced item, but believe me it works for the most part, as it attracts bidders and the more bids an item has, then generally it attracts more bidders!

Of course there is an outside risk of the item selling for a low price, but if you're concerned then you can always put a reserve on.

Also, a poster above mentioned that some people literally bid in the last few minutes. That's very true, as is the good tip about weekend evenings.

Ebay can be infuriating, but also good fun. I'm just about to put some things on, but I've been saying that for weeks. I need motivation!
