Our shire x is having his shoes taken off in a few weeks time, basically to try and stop field getting so trashed as hopefully he'll stop out all winter. Because of this we won't be able to hack out so I've decided over the winter I'm going to work on handling and confidence building with him, I'd like to get him to really trust me.

He is a lovely horse but he is big and strong and although 90% of the time he's a good boy to handle there is the other 10% when he isn't! He knows he's stronger than we are, since I've been leading him back on his bridle this has improved no end but it still needs work.

So I need ideas, I've already made a start in that when he's fed he has to back up first before he gets it, otherwise he mobs you (food features very highly in his life!) and this morning I did some leading work with him by getting him to stop/start when I said, back up, move over and we always did some weaving in/out cones. I did this in bridle and I wore hat and gloves.

Other ideas I have are putting poles on ground and putting spooky things around field. I've also thought about doing some clicker training with him as I'd think he'd be very good, I have got a book on clicker training horses so going to have a read of that.

Eventually I'd love to walk him out in hand, at the moment I wouldn't dare as if he goes I can't hold on to him!! Therefore I'd like to get him to stage of listening to me 100% of the time. I'd also like to try long reining but I've never done it before.

Help/ideas/advice much appreciated xx

We use a lot of 'toys' to work our youngsters - things like standing on an elephant stand, walking over a tarpauline/astroturf etc.
We hang feed sacks from a pole for the horses to walk under, make steps for them to go up and down, barrels close together to get them used to narrow gaps.
I taught MJ to fetch, and play football to keep his mind busy once he'd retired.
There are all sorts of thing you can do - depending on what you've got access to, and how much DIY you want to do!
Have fun :)
Oh, and always use a long line in case he tries to jump on you!!
