I was at local riding school at weekend. A pony in a lesson was very uncontrollable - running away etc. I commented that it must just be firey. Turns out it has a problem with its teeth , and so when it breaths in cold air it affects its nerves in its mouth - hence the behavior.
Problem would cost thousands to fix and local school doesn't have thousands.

Pony can eat ok etc and was fine in box, but maybe im getting soft, but I was actually upset to see the pony in that wild state and disappointed that it was being used! It is well fed, groomed and watered, but I feel that the fact that it is obviously in pain when being ridden then it should not be used until its teeth are fixed, and that not fixing its teeth and prolonging the pain is cruel?

The info about the ponies teeth issue was given to me by a client of this school - just in case someone decides that I am making up wild rumors (we all know what it can be like!!)

Ive never heard of anything like that?!

horses breathe through their noses for one, and why would it only affect him when he is being ridden?

It sounds more like the pony just has bad teeth that need seeing to

ah ok, hmm well that is def not acceptable, is the pony owned by riding school I take it? something shoud be said,

I dont think they would like being sued would they when someone gets hurt, so they need to do something.

I don't have alot of knowledge on horses teeth, but could the RS not put a flash on the horse?

In the long term, getting the horses teeth treated would surely be better and safer for clients?

horses don't breathe through their mouths. sounds very strange to me.
one of my horses has a cracked front tooth (god knows how he did it, it's cracked all the way up but stable) and that doesn't cause him any pain. having done the same thing myself, i know it's agony... so i don't think they have nerves in their teeth quite the same as we do.
the pony needs treatment, if only so that it doesn't injure someone in a wild and distressed moment.

My horse has holes in her teeth and my vet has told me they do not have nerves in their teeth and do not feel pain in them as we do.
