Hi there,
I have a 3 year old ISH that I'm planning on backing later this year. He was a June foal, so probably a bit behind some of yours, but I'd love to see photos of other three year olds just to get an idea of what he should be looking like at this stage :D
He's been out at grass at a stud for the last couple of years and I haven't seen him since last summer - but I'm bringing him closer to home next week so I'm dying to see what he looks like now! :)

Thanks Sammii, they're gorgeous! :) And your TB is sooooo shiny! I'd say my fella probably looks like a giant hairy yak in comparison!
 
That was last summer in the sun!!!!!. She is four soon, so can't wait to get back on her after her 4 month winter holiday.

I'm sure your boy will look lovely, nothing wrong with a hairy Yak!!!!!! Nice to know he has been out having some baby time. Little does he know what is coming!!!:D

Post some pic's once you have him home.
 
This is my boy last summer when he was 'technically' a 3 year old. His actual birthday is October though so he is a bit behind, but I expect he is similar age here to what yours is now. I am not backing him til March when he'll be 3 and a half as I just didn't think he was ready before... sure enough he has filled out a lot since this pic.

CBFan, I think I might have the same issue with my lad and need to wait until later in the year to back him - he's a big boy and the last time I saw him he definitely had plently of filling out to do. He had botulism when he was around 1 1/2 so that might have set him back a bit too.
Trouble - how old is your horsey in those photos - where they when he'd just turned 3?
I'll have to post some pics of Dougal when I get him home to see what you think about how long I need to wait to start him off. The current plan is to get him properly handled and used to all his tack, with a little bit of lunging in May/June and then give him a bit of time off and back him in late August/September, although I might need to leave it a bit longer depending how much growing he still has to do. I'm due to have a baby in July, so either way I won't be backing him before late August! :D

He was lightly backed in the Autumn (so at 3 and a half ish) but he's not mature enough to do anything but a little toddle with a light rider (my mum;))

In your situation I'd spend some time getting him used to equipment etc, maybe the weight of a rider over his back, do a little lunging and longreining (a couple of times a week max) and then back him late summer, ride him for a few months and turn him away for the worst of the winter (when it's harder to keep them going due to the weather) let him mature and then start again the following spring.. but thats just me... sometimes I think it's best to be patient but a lot depends on the individual horse.

I have decided to start leaning over my boy tomorrow! eeek! I think that stage is actuallygoing to take a while for him to fully accept so I've worked in a littlemore time to my plan to accomodate this ;)
 
If I could find them under their hippo mud you'd be very welcome to pics of mine but until things dry up you'll have to make do with these last year at 2.& half years. They're both TB x Cob so slightly similar!

I didn't take those pics, they wee before I bought him, some, I think, before backing...and at latest during early backing process. So he' have been not long turned 3.

He DEF still has some growing to do, which his winter off is allowing him to do with gusto! lol

This was him just after I got him home...Which was end of Octoer so he'd have been 3 years and 4 months at that point.

This is my 3yr old Connemara mare, she was an April foal and is currently in foal herself and is due the end of March! This is her on the 19th of December doing a little bit of inhand practise and posing for the camera!

I'm sooo excited now about collecting mine tomorrow, can't wait to see what he looks like now - I'll post some photos at the weekend :)
Just wondering, I have a feeling he's going to be a bit light, he's been out all winter without much grass and whilst he has had hay he's not a particularly good doer. Does anyone feed Blue Chip to their 3 year olds, and do you find it good? I don't want to start pumping him full of feed, but need something that will put a bit of condition on him...

How exciting! Can't wait to see pics! I personally wouldn't be in a hurry to put weight on him. Slowly does it! Just give him plenty of hay and a good fibre based bucket feed with a vit and min supp added. it will come on sooner than you think! ;)
