Can I realistically go DIY? Advice Please !!!!

Due to financial reasons I am looking to move from my yard where I am on Part Livery to a farm down the road where it is DIY. I have limited time as I work and have 2 children but the girls there have agreed to help with turnout and bring in etc. I am happy to pay them as it will be cheaper than where I am now.

Do you think it's a a bad idea. I have TB 's and I would perhaps let them live out more than I would on the Part Livery Yard but they will have a stable for when it gets really cold.

It's just that things are getting very tight financially, and I have already decided to sell one of my horses, which fortunately one of the girls at the new place is going to buy.

My friend breeds Arabians and they stay out 24/7 365 days of the year (rugged up of course) ... I hope you all think it's the right decision as I couldn't bare the thought of losing my other horse if I can't cut costs so I think it's the sensible option. HELP ........

YES its a good idea!!!! They`ll survive :) Mine will be staying out a lot more this year, mostly to keep the weight off because they`re doing a bit too good!

A guy at my yard breeds TB`s (not very well) and his are out 24/7 365 days a year, the yearlings soemtimes are brough in (havent this year) but the brood mares are out regardless of being in foal.
 
I'm not quite sure what you are asking. If there is support available at the yard then you should be OK, and if you are selling one of your horses, then you will have a lot more time. Are you suggesting that TBs shouldn't be on DIY?? Of course they can live out, some live out all winter.
 
My 19yo TB lives out all year, infact she hates being stabled. I have started to rug her for the winter as she is getting older, it is wetter where we live now and she doesn't like being wet and cold.

I think that your TB will be fine with extra turnout. :)
 
Thank you so much for your replies everyone. It's very reassuring to know he can be out all year. My problem is time, and not being able to go down to muck out, turn out and bring in every day. It's on a farm so we have lots of our own hay which is good and I have a stable for those really bad nights. It's a relief as selling one and moving the other to DIY will save me about £600 per month :-)
 
Good idea I'm on a diy yard I work full time and so does the woman I share the field with we share the chores so only have to go up once daily each! My arab x stays out until December then goes back out in march it's a compromise cos she hates the cold and we have no shelter at all!
 
Being out is better than being stuck in a box esp if you don't have time to muck and skip it out......most horses do really well out good luck
 
With ad lib hay or haylage, appropriate rugs and some form of shelter out of the worst of the weather I think your horse will positively flourish. Good that you will have help around you if you need it, especially having the children to look after. I think you'll be posting in time to come saying what a positive move it was.
 
Yep it's a good idea. Iv got 5 horses on diy, lives in during winter. I have 3 kids and work full time. I get up 5.30 in the morning to turn out muck out etc and get home 8pm in evenings. Anything can be done if you want to
 
I don't have children but I work full time on a DIY yard full of full time workers and we all get by just fine :) Our horses go out before work and they wait out until we come home to get them in but I promise you that if I had the option of 24hr turnout all winter by 2yo TB would be living out with rugs and hay. You'll be fine and I hope it makes your life a lot easier for you :)
