Please show me yours! This is my new boy, a rescue.. Just 18 months old and renamed (by me) from Dougle to Paradise - Dice for short!

This is my Poppy, we got her as a 10wk old pup from a rescue centre she's a right cutie and would do anything for a tennis ball and has even gone so far as to steal the horses jolly balls in the field to play with :D
She's a real people person and loooooves kids but she's not a big fan of other dogs :o

Here's a few of her as a pup, this is when we first got her... wish I'd taken more now... sorry if they're huge! :o

And now here's my girl all grown up at 2yo...

She never really grew into her ears ha ha! She looked like bat dog when she was little :D
They are great dogs and so trainable because of their super brains! :D Poppy's great for amusement value when she plays with her toys - she lies on her back and holds it in her front paws, biting it and growling and trying to disembowl it like a cat ha ha!:D - or when she's having a "puppy" mad moment and haring around like a nutter :D

sandi_84,

that's a very smart looking bitch! I could do something with that! ;) Has she ever seen sheep? If not, then she should! :D

She looks as bright as a button. ;)

Alec.

Thank you, I love her loooooads! She is an incredibly intelligent young girl! She actually came from working stock but for some reason her and her brother from the same litter got put to the SSPCA rescue centre - unfotunately me and my mum only had space for one otherwise we would have had both, the dog was a handsome little chap - she has seen sheep before but usually from a little distance.
I've trained her to voice, whistle (handy for directing her to a lost tennis ball :D) and some hand commands and although she does have her "deaf" moments and refuses to do anything I ask  she is usually very good.
I'd love to see her do something like sheep hearding (no Alec you can't have her! ;)) or fly ball which I think she'd excell at! She's a little streak of lightning! :D

Sandi_84 thank you for sharing she is beautiful! If you don't mind me asking, what does she weigh and what is she fed on? Only had my boy 9 days now and he's putting on weight (under all his fur his ribs were VERY prominent and his hip & shoulders were too :( ). He weighs in at 18.3kg which was recorded today, although ribs and hips are still very prominent..! :)

Thank you, your boy is tremendously handsome! :D
I've just got out the bathroom scales (rubbish thing that it is!) and according to that she is just over 12kg but that could be completely wrong as I'm not sure how accurate my scales are ha ha! :D
She had a wee accident with a stick a few months back and when she was getting checked over the vet weighed her and told mum she was slightly overweight for her size - she's very petite even for a border collie! I think she's fine weight wise as she has a decent covering, you can feel everything under her skin easily but nothing like her ribs are poking out so as far as I'm concerned it must have been very very slight overweight
She was pretty fussy about food when we first got her and we've tried her on a few different things over the last 2 years but we (she) finally settled on a mix of Purina Beeta Active dry food and a pouch of Pedigree in gravy. She didn't like just the dry food (which is a complete food) even if we soaked it or tried putting gravy in it she'd go off it after a couple of days but she seems to be going strong on the mix of wet and dry food... fussy mutt!;)

Heres our rescued bitch Jessie, we think she's about 2.
Shes very shy and sadly sometimes behaves very oddly, as a result of mistreatment. Shes terrified of men, doesn't like being in rooms on her own and wont eat food in a bowl! But.. shes happy now, fed, loved and that matters the most :)

Haha thank you very much for doing that! She sounds lightweight compared to my skinny giant lol. Dice is quite tall, I WILL get round to measuring him at some point :D His food is mixed biscuits and wet as well, but possibly looking to change the wet to something a bit more nutritious.

Have you done any obedience training or agility training? Also how did you whistle train? Dice knows the basics which we are working on to perfect them a bit more (sit, stay, down, come & heel) although whistle training sounds like fun! :D

Toast she's so pretty!! I love her pink collar :D Dice can be very nervous, especially when voices are raised or if something is thrown (like a top being thrown on to the bed) he cowers and hides :( he also has an obsession for shadows, and watches tv for hours without moving.. Oh and stares randomly at the ceiling occasionally. All as a result of being locked in a room for 6 months with little interaction and what I guess only shadows as entertainment..

Toast,

What a gorgeous girl! Well done you for rescuing the poor thing!
We had a similar case with my last bitch Meg. After much (years) persuading my dad finally agreed to get me a dog, he went to the rescue centre to have a look and took me back the next day. I actually was rather taken by another dog but he convinced me to take the border collie instead and didn't tell me till we had her in the car on the way home that she was going to be PTS the next morning if no one took her :(
It turned out she'd had 3 homes before us none of whom kept her for more than a month because she was so "difficult". Her original home she was kept in a car and the man would kick her with big work boots on!:( We didn't find out most of the details till we'd had her a while and she went mental barking at my dad and then running away because he'd put on his work boots to do some gardening.
She was a lovely lovely girl who just needed some major TLC, at first she didn't know what outside was, how to play and was terrified by EVERYTHING! She hated men and would run and hide from any man she didn't know well (except strangely one time we had Sky installed and she instantly took to the man who did the installation and sat pressed up against him while he was in the living room :D) but she adored my dad and would follow him anywhere. Loud noises scared her silly and she would run off but with him she stuck by his side no matter what and eventually he began taking her to work at a noisy boatyard which she loved!
Used to take her running after school everyday for about an hour until I left home and had to leave her with my parents which was very sad :( They eventually moved to the town and I moved in with them (again) so we were all together till I moved in with my then OH. They decided to move to spain and were going to take her with them, passported her etc but finally decided that it would be unfair to put such a nervous dog through the travelling and moving to a completely different country. Luckily my mum's friend took her (I lived in a seriously small one bedroom flat with the OH so I didn't have space :() where she lived happily on their smallholding till the day she died :( I was heartbroken that I couldn't keep her and was completely inconsolable when she died. For two weeks after I cried almost constantly and the only thing that made it even vaugely ok was that I knew how happy she was with her new home (we visited LOTS!) and her various new animal friends :) The poor love had only ever needed a good home where people would be sympathetic to what she'd been through and had the patience to get past her fears and she turned out to be a wonderful girl who was with us for a very long time :)

That's such a lovely story! Jessie is very taken with my younger sister, she is learning to trust my dad but she still cowers if he walks near her too quickly or when he sneezes! Hopefully one day she'll understand that there's no need to be frightened! Shes still not grasped that she'll be fed every day now, we have to make sure she cant get in the bins! Poor sod!

Jenniaddams,
Awwww! Lovely! :D

No bother at all! Poppy wasn't too sure what I was asking so had to lift her onto them ha ha! :D Ooh gosh yes she is teeny tiny but surprisingly solid for such a wee thing ha ha!
We've never done any official training as such just what I've done with her myself.

I started out with the baiscs too, sit was easy as was lie down and stay, paw was fairly easy, roll over took a while, high five came with a bit of practice and heel is still being worked on but she's much better at it off the lead than on.

After that I moved on to voice commands while we were out like basic recall "Come!" "Over" for crossing roads and (this might sound daft...) "this side" and putting my hand down on the relevant side with a tennis ball held in my hand till she figured out what I was asking for, usefull when passing bikes or other dogs.

"Look" I taught her as a basis for hand signals so I could shout "Look" and get her attention before doing anything else even at a distance. We achieved this with the help of my best friend the tennis ball held up in front of my face ha ha! :D It worked though!

"Go on" was her release command from stay and from that we managed to work up to "On you go" when she kept coming back it would send her away again.

After learning the voice commands for "On you go" and "Go on" I then just did a hand signal at the same time till eventually I could phase out the voice and just do the hand signal (hand held to chest and then with my index finger pointed straightened out my arm), she picked it up quickly and now I can do the movement really quickly and she'll hop off ;)

I hold a hand palm out towards her for "stay", closed fist with index finger pointing up for "sit" and with my palm down at about chest height slowly lowering it to waist height for "lie down". All taught in the house before trying outside and we basically just started out doing it at close distance then using the "Go on" command I would send her off and using "Look" catch her attention for whatever I wanted her to do next. It took a while but we eventually got really good at distance commands.
For directions left or right I would hide a tennis ball at a distance left or right of me, use "Look" and then using a variation on the "Go on" point either left or right with a voice command (as I always get confused by "Come by" and "Away to me" I substituted "Away" for left and "Off" for right :o)

For whistle training I again went to my trusty tennis ball. I started with shouting "Come" immediately followed by two short whistles until she caught on to what the whistling was for and I could phase out the voice command.

For directions again I hid the tennis ball to the left or right of me used a combo of voice and hand command for the direction and immediately following with a whistle (start mid pitch and raise the tone for left, start mid pitch and lower the tone for right) this took a while and she does sometimes get so excited she doesn't listen but when she's paying attention you can direct her quite accurately with whistles for left, right and come :D

I fiddled around with a stay whistle which was just a single drawn out mid pitch whistle and she was starting to get it but it wasn't perfect and I was eventually going to incorporate a "Go on" whistle but I hadn't done anything past thinking about it.

I had a lot of time on my hands at the time as I was unemployed but after getting a job I found time for training to be hard to find, walking and throwing the ball was enough for tired me :D

Oh... all my whistling is done through my teeth, I don't have a dog whistle :D

I can't think of anything else at the moment but I'm sure we've done other things too ha ha! :D Hope the way I explained my "Training" process all makes sense! ;) They do pick things up very quickly even in my ham fisted clumsy training ;)

Oooh just remembered a couple that I use every day! duh! "Wait" for when she's off the lead "Leave" and "Here" for just before coming to a suitable crossing point on roads. So I'll say "Here" and she'll turn towards the road (I kind of use it like a doggy half halt ha ha!) and then "Wait" so she stops "Sit" till the cars are past and then "Over" to cross :) All training was rewarded with treats either food or ball (food inside ball outside as she doesn't take treats outside for some reason) and I never use negative reinforcement except shouting "No" or "Oi!" when I'm really mad ;) I never ever hit Poppy and if she ever does something really bad/dangerous like the time mum was having trouble with her being possesive over mum's bed (she would growl at you and bare her teeth) I just get her by the scruff and put her in the submissive position and she chills out straight away.... you may have got from this post that Poppy was bought by mum (AKA soft touch) but she's really my dog as she'll not listen to mum at all, I did all the training and I'm definitely top dog in our house when it comes to doggy matters ha ha! ;)

Loved my Meg :)
Aw poor soul :( I can never understand why people are cruel to children or animals it just completely boggles my mind and makes me so mad!
She'll come round for sure, patience and love is totally the key, it's very sweet she's taken to your younger sister already :D
Abused animals will never be "perfect" and they will probably always keep a few of their quirks, border collies being quite neurotic anyway doesn't help but eventually you'll have a lovely, trusting and loving girl who will be completely unrecognisable to the one she is today! :D

Wow!! Sandi that's fantastic thank you so much! It gives me something to work on with Dice as he's so willing to learn bless him! He does very well at "come", he will "wait" while I put his food down until I point to it then he goes to eat, he's learning more and more every day "stay" although he likes to be close so it's a little difficult lol. "Heel" he picked up in minutes with a treat, although he does occasionally wander on slightly in front :D

Think I shall give it a go tomorrow at teaching him "on you go" and to "look". For "come by" and "away to me" which is left and right?! Sorry to sound simple lol. Will see how he works those out then go from there!

Can't thank you enough, that post is brilliant!! Will be copying it and carrying it with me so I can learn which command for what and so can he lol :D

Ha ha! Aw thank you, that's very sweet!
Seriously though this was just my version of trying to stimulate her, I didn't even look up a training manual  I just did what seemed straightforward and common sense-ish :D It worked well for us for sure though :D
I can never remember which one is which either (come by and away to me) and when I was teaching the left and right commands I just took it into my head to give it a shot while I was out already and didn't have internet access to look it up ha ha! If I could do it over again I'd probably commit to memory which one was which just to teach the correct voice commands but as far as I understand it farmers use various whistles depending on what dog they are using (don't quote me on this I could be completely wrong!) so I think I was fairly safe making up my own whistle commands ha ha! :D

Dice sounds like a lovely, smart lad and he'll pick things up so quickly it'll astound you! Just practice everything you are doing on a regular basis to keep it fresh in his head and try not to get frustrated when it doesn't work according to plan (as it sometimes doesn't ;)) and LOADS of praise when he gets it right! One step at a time worked really well for us, we played with one thing till we got it right and then built on that. It sounds like you're getting a great basis for new commands :D There are endless things to teach and have fun with and borders give you such a great feeling when they learn something new and execute it well :D

Any excuse to show off my very handsome man. He is 11 years old this year and still acts like a baby! I have been told he is quite a large collie (20kg) and he does have a lot of bone!

Umbongo,

He is loovely! Solid lad! ;):D

Ponyfeet,

As a p.s: It is handy to teach the hand signals as border collies can be prone to deafness as they get older.

Jenniaddams your two are lovely, very much a pair :D

Umbongo, 11 years old seriously?! I wouldn't have put him any older than 5! He's very handsome, I'm thinking when Dice is up to weight he's going to be around the same weight as him.

Thanks a lot for the advice Sandi, you've been great! I shall update at some point to say how he's doing :) he's my first pure border collie, I've had a couple of collie crosses in the past (rescue dogs again) but they weren't as keen to learn as Dice is so I want to give it a shot with him! He's so loving and wants to please all the time.

Umbongo, how do you measure their bone?

TBF those photos are actually a couple of years old, but he still looks pretty much the same! He has a touch of arthritis now and the very beginnings of cataracts in his eyes but he is doing very well and I hope to get a couple more years out of him as he is just the most amazing dog. He loves the camera and strikes a pose whenever I get it out!

I have not measured his bone, I meant that he is a very solid boy! He is quite muscular and has very thick set legs.

My first collie Megan. Rehomed from a farm at 18 months and taught me lots about this amazing breed. Sadly PTS in August 2011 age 14.

My current girl Tess. Adopted from Rescue in January 2012 age 10 month (failed worker apparently) does obedience and cani cross and hoping to find a suitable agility club to have a go at that this year. She's just lovely - has more issues than my first girl but I reckon had a much rougher start to life.

No bother at all, it was quite fun having a wee wander down memory lane trying to remember what all I did with Poppy :D
It'd be great to read posts about how he's coming along, I'll look forward to seeing them! :D

Here are my two;

Dougal is a smooth coated blue merle (yep, he's full BC- despite many people insisting that he has lurcher or Lab in there somewhere).
Mum was a smooth coated black/white (where he gets his 'tag' ears from) and Dad was a big rough coated merle.

He's a nightmare if I'm honest. Lovely in the house but has a strong chase instinct and developed a fear aggression when he hit around 18 months. He's lovely to people he knows but hates it when people walk past him into his little 'space bubble' when out on walks and also hates horses, sadly- which makes my life fun.
Love him dearly though!

Next is Oscar, a red tri merle. He's a lovely little dog. Very loyal and great around the horses (for the most part). He's only 17 months old.

Sorry about the size differences!

some lovely collies !!

this is our chap, we have had him from 7 mnths old from rescue centre - now 12 years old (not sure of age in picture) comes out with horse - but has an incredible "rounding instinct" which has cost him a few teeth !

SatsumaGirl - ours has had major issues since day one - no-one else is allowed to pet him except us unless we leave him with my parents then they become "his" people ! he growls at us sometimes too but has never followed through (although we dont take any chances !) - is missing a few teeth from rounding up the horses (we have tried everything to stop him to no avail)

Love looking at the pics of all the BC's!

Here's the latest pic of my 4 the other week in the snow. From l-r, Bertie, 14.5 years old, black/white boy, I've had him since 10 weeks old, he has competed at agility, HTM, breed showing and a little flyball and he's been a registered P.A.T. dog, Skye, 7 years old, blue/white girl, I phoned up for her when she was a day old and went to visit every week until she came home at 7 weeks old, she's competes at agility (competed at Crufts 2011) and flyball (competed at the Euros 2012), she's been a registered P.A.T. dog, Star, 3.75 years old, lilac/white, daughter of Skye (so been here since the day she was born), competes at agility and flyball and does some thereapy work, and Teagan, 11.5 year old, black tri, smooth coat, I've had her since she was 7 weeks old, competed at agility and HTM.

not mine but the gang I lived with for a while :)

Meg the older girl, she's 12/13 and a bit wobbly and not quite all there all the time!

My beautiful boy, who we lost last year. Still feels very raw. He was a monkey and I've got a similar snarly picture to the one above! He worked with cows for a while and i loved taking him out to fetch the milkers in. Some gorgeous dogs here. BCs make my heart melt.

Ladyyearl,
What gorgeous girls! Love the first pic of Tess! :D

Thank you - actually that was the day I met her at the Rescue Centre. She's a bit more grown up now but that still the face that looks up at me.

Love seeing all the collie pix
