I have always loved arabs and arab crosses and am dithering about wondering whether to breed my cob mare in the future for another me horse, if I did it would definitely be to an arab! Have met a few arab crosses and as I was describing to my mum, my cob is lovely but can sometimes be a bit "meh", whereas arabs are lovely but I find can be a bit too "ahhh!" for me, so hopefully a meh crossed with an ahh! should produce an ahh... :)

I had 7 wonderful years with an ID x Arab... and can honestly say she could be either/or, depending on the mood! she could turn from calm ID mindset to Arab-mode (and I loved both!) but the mix always struck me as oil & water - she also had an incredibly long back, but I didn't see either parent, so that may have just been a throw-down. She was my one in a million!

You will need to really assess all your mare's pros and cons in her temperament, performance and conformation, plus your facilities, your level of experience and budget. Then if you decide that she's really worth breeding from you need to chose a stallion that compliments her - so it is strong where she has weak points.

I would suggest that you look at performance arabians rather than the in-hand show type.

However, I thought about breeding a few years ago and ended up buying a weanling instead. It was definitely the right decision as the horse I bought was my lovely grey. She is perfect (lovely conformation, fantastic temperament, trainable, athletic - just super duper really ;) :p) and this might be a good route for you too.

I would really like to see a pic of this cross, I've often wondered what it would look like :).

Agree.

I'd like to add my favourite type of Arab into the mix too - Crabbets.

Good, old fashioned, sturdy, war horses with bloodlines back to the best of the desert :D.

I was lucky to spend 22 years with Obi, who was 98% Crabbet.

He was 100% trustworthy on the roads, jumped, had paces and length of stride like a hunter and a canter that was floating on a cloud.

Not mine, but sired by my pure bred Arab stallion, born 2012.

I realise reading my OP it does sound a bit like asking for advice, silly me I'm never good at getting my point across online :)

This is Oscar, arab x traditional gypsy cob. He's got a lovely temperament, but has days when he has his 'cob brain' on him - very relaxed, not spooky, dope on a rope, and then days where he has his 'Arab brain' on him - very spooky, head in the air jogging everywhere etc ;)

Aww Oscar is such a cutie!

we were never 100% sure on Ruby's breeding but we had a strong suspicion it was arab x cob type

What do you recon?

Arab type in summer

Wooly cob type in winter!

not to hijack thread sorry, oberon i have an id x arab, if you have a look some of my posts theres pics of him :-) hes too clever for his own good!!

My friend had one; he was real floats like butterfly stings like bee sort of horse. No photos but he always sent us into fits of giggles when he had tail up floating arab moments with is feathers in full flight :D

Ridefast, no one was giving you advice they were siimply giving a story to their picture, your reply is very odd.

I think that RF got narked by my first post.

She can breed her cob to WH Justice if she can afford to. He is a truly fabulous horse and deserves his moniker 'the champion maker'. However, even bred with a really calm cob, the resulting foal could be hotter than a cheap vindaloo. :p Which is absolutely fine if you can deal with little fireballs full of snort and blow.

I suggested that she look at performance arabs. Marcus Aurelius would be a perfect example of the sort of stallion that she could consider. Of course, I have no idea what her mare looks like and they might be a terrible match conformation wise.

Hey ho.

I'm, another Crabbet devotee with a 96 % & 98% (100% GSB). MA very nice stallion, doing well undersaddle & showing himself to have excellent manners. I chose Indian Idyll, who stands in Hampshire, close to his half-brother Grecian Idyll (both 100% Crabbets). For them look up Worth Arabian Stud & Binley Arabian Stud. If you would be interested in a Crabbet stallion (better brain, less snort/blow & much more useful working horse with lovely paces but very definately not slow, mine are pretty sharp!), then there is the Crabbet Convention in July. Nearly 100 Crabbet arabians across all disciplines (including my girls) will be parading at Addington Manor (sure to be plenty of stallions to view), & over next few days there is an unofficial stud tour where you will be able to visit loads of Crabbet studs across UK (go to ones you want to).
