As title really! I am replacing my duvets so thought I'd bring them down the yar to use for the horses. Do I have to use a surcingle or will the rug over the top hold them in place?

I havnt used one yet but I know someone that uses them on her show jumpers, Im sure the rug keeps them in place but I guess it depends on the fit.

I use them. It depended on his coat really as to weather the duvet slipped or not. Some times I used a surcingle and others I just used a flece underneath and sometimes the duvet went straight on with just a rug over. Have a go and see really :).

we cut two square holes in the front at each side where the buckles would be and tie it with a bit of baler twine/flash strap so it doesnt slide back, if its on a smaller horse then we use a surcingle because sometimes it can slip but normally we just use an over rug:)

what like an actual duvet... togs and all...?

I thought it was illegal to use anything not intended for equine use (and anything not costing hundreds of pounds and endorsed by famous riders) for fear of lynching!

:)

If I was to use one, I'd put it on so it goes right up to the ears, put top rug on, fold the corner up to the wither and do the same the other side, tuck into the rug thats you put on top then either fold back or leave as it is, my friend does this and they rarely slip

like this ^^ and fold the now front pointing corner backwards, you can either leave it as it is or put a sercingle over the top. Just like using a wool blanket.

We used to use them at college when we were short of rugs!
We would put the duvet on underneath the rug, no surcingles. And fold the front of the duvet over the withers (on top of the rug) - never had any slip too badly or come off.

I suppose you could get some velcro etc and make some homemade straps if slipping becomes a problem. :)

velcro, either tack it on or glue on, the fluffy side to the under side of the rug the prickly side to the duvet, then they don't move simples :)

only pics i have with them on are lying down so crap. put them on right up to ears and just wrap round the neck, rug over the top (even if it doesn't have neck) usually slip down to nearly the front of the rug by morning but stop on. odd occasion horse come out and there kinda trailing them behind lol but they dont bother.
