I am thinking about showing my three year old in hand this weekend but he is not yet bitted due to wolf teeth which are being removed next week. Can I show in a headcollar? I have tried him in a be nice halter but he just gets agitated. He is ultra laid back ID X TB and I thought I would try leather headcollar + lunge rein. Any Ideas/experiences really welcome

no, i wouldn't, not only is it wrong turn out but you will have very little control in what can be a very exciting situation for a youngster...either wait until the wolf teeth have healed or use a very gentle soft rubber snaffle and inhand bridle....

ditto and add that you could be potentially putting yourself and others in alot of danger, i think also judges like to see 3 yrolds bitted , i may be wrong but from the little showing with babies i do, the 3yrold class horses are bitted!!

Thanks

I put him in a rubber snaffle this morning and his teeth must have cut his gums because his mouth bled quite badly. He wasn't worried in particular but I felt dreadful. Better leave it a month or so then. At least then the weather will be better (Aberdeenshire)

I have seen people show in those white halters. Not sure of the correct name for them but they are made from a white material and the halter and leadrope are all in one.

Just use a halter... You'll have mucht he same control as they have pressure points on the nose. I've shown 3 yr olds in hand in them.. so why not..

Are they not just the ones for natives?

I have yearling who I will be showing this year.
She will be bitted. Dangerous without it IMO.

Why not use a stud headcollar? With a chain over the nose? They're not harsh unless you yank on them, and I think the judges wouldn't mind.

Was that to me or the OP?

I *think* for some of my classes she is requested to be bitted. I would rather have that control tbh. she is normally fine in a pressure halter but tshows can be very exciting!

I think you're right.
I also think you can get headcollars that are similar to bitless bridles in that they put pressure on different parts of the head and give you better control (not the be nice ones) Sorry for being so unclear!

I showed my mare in a head collar when she was three but it was in an indoor arena, wouldn't have done it outside as she would have been too excited.

If you are going to show in a headcollar it should be a quality leather headcollar, not any form of rope halter. Yes, the white headcollars are for natives.
