When i finally go freelance, my boss has given me permission to use her horse at her yard to give lessons. As i dont own the horse, would i be covered using it for lessons, as i am thinking it would kind of be like people using a horse and then coming to me independently for lessons?

Any thoughts on this would be good, thanks in advance. :)

Think there may be a licensing issue - the horse could be seen as being hired. Check with your local Environmental Health Dept. The conditions of licence include adequate insurance cover - better to get it right before you start, or worse find you are not insured in the case of a claim following an accident.

The simple answer is: if you give people lessons on horses provided by you then you MUST have a local autority license as a 'riding school'! (Colleges ARE licensed as 'riding schools'.) A riding school may own horses - or have them on working livery - or whatever!

But if the horse is provided by you - whoever owns it - then you are not JUST uninsured if you give lessons on it ('for hire or reward') - you are also breaking the law!

I occasionally give people lessons on my horses - if I have their horse in for re-schooling - but I can't charge for the lesson!

Colleges are licensed establishments with all that entails: veterinary inspections, oversight of health and safety procedures, etc. You will be breaking the law if you hire out a horse to teach on.
