My friend has got hold of one of *These* bits to try, do you hook normal cheek pieces and reind to the bottom loop or can i use it as a cheltenham gag, which is what im looking for?!

Thanks :)

I guess it's possible but I don't think it's what it's designed for! I'm wracking my brains to think why you wouldn't do it but at the moment nothing is coming to mind.

The holes in the bit are oblong though and really designed for your cheek pieces and reins to go through.

Thats what I thought, but I don't think it will be enough because he is very strong XC and I need a Cheltenham gag, I dont see why not :)

The holes will not be the right shape to allow a cheltenham type cheekpiece go through smoothly, so you will lose the movement required, it may also wear out the leather quickly and be unsafe.

I don't necessarily agree with this :o

The holes aren't round - agreed, they are oblong. However they are quite big holes & would fit the rope type cheek pieces through with enough room to slide easily.

I have the bit & I also have a cheltenham gag with rope cheeks & my cheek pieces would fit in & slide - I guess it depends what type of gag cheek pieces you will be using.

However as previously stated - this isn't what it's designed for so there may be a really good reason why you shouldn't do it - it just hasn't come to mind yet!

I'm guessing if the action of that bit with a Cheltenham gag was thought wise they would have designed a gag version? I'm also unsure how you would get the Ds through those slots?! What issues are you having with the Cheltenham gag that are making you consider this? X

Nothing in particular, im gathering a few bits together to take coblet to a cross country course and they them all out. My friend has one of these bits and thought i could use them with Gag cheeks, as i am looking for a cheltenham gag, obviousually if it works i will buy a proper one.
Another lady had lent me her eggbut cheltenham gag, however i think he will lean on this, i am ideally looking for a waterford cheltenham, but i would like to try this one too as it is ported and my lad likes ported bits :)
