I have just bought a bale of straw and it has alot of white mould on it and is quite sticky feeling and hard to seperate.Got to seperate small bits at a time by hand.Just wondering if i could still use it (1 bale probably lasts me about 2 weeks) and then just make sure i get a nice one after. One of my horses do throw it all up to eat the grain from it but could i even just change his and still use the mouldy one on the horse that doesnt eat from it ?

NO !Mould is mould ,and will damage your horses wind(breathing). Avoid any hay or straw that is mouldy ,like the plague. if someone trys to sell you some ,tell them to take it back ,at their own expense and if they wont ,set trading standards on the ********.

This.

Mould spores are airbourne and can effect your horses breathing, I knew a mare who got a very bad chest infection from mould spores in her hayledge.

Dispose of the bale (in a place where no horses can get to it!) or take it back to where you got it from for a refund/exchange. Never entertain the thought of using mouldy bales, even if you are convinced a horse may not eat it (as we all know they will eat the most unlikeliest of things at times!!), your horse does not have to eat it for it to affect its breathing etc. Well done for asking the question rather than just doing it.

it is very good practice to be aware of what is in your bales also, we have beautiful hay and straw (as I am so fussy) but do occasionally get things like baled snakes, flat hedgehogs etc, if you get anything dead in your bale then dispose of all of the hay and straw that is anywhere near to it or dispose of the whole bale (I always dispose of the whole bale just to make sure nothing like "juices" have seeped into the bale. Euuukkkk.

Thanks,i did have to use it last night as i had nothing else and the person that sold it to me refused to change it but it has now been changed.

I don't think on this one ocassion it would matter too much, its just if you do this on a regular basis. It will be thrown out in a day or two anyway, so don't worry too much just this once.
