I generally wear chaps and jod boots when riding and find long boots uncomfortable. Can I wear short boots for competition, I have an Arab and will hopefully be doing some ridden classes with her this year.
Thanks in advance

Short boots & leather gaiters would be much better than short boots & chaps.

I know lots of people who use gaiters in the show ring. However a proper pair of long boots, properly fitted, would be perfect.

i wear black boots and plain leather gaiters , i have long boots but they are uncomfortable. i have a arab x and wear these in the riding horse classes, you cant really tell the diffrence unless your right up close. as long as the boots and gaiters match it looks fine! :D

Of course you can!! If you are showing then the gaitors would look better and are in fact compulsory for XC or BE.
If just doing SJ then chaps are fine if you are happy in them

I wear gaitors for showing and XC and either for SJ and DR although only unaffil DR but would wear gaitors for posher DR:D

I have short legs too and for every day riding I wear ariat boots and chaps. For my dressage competitions I wear ariat boots and tredstep fairies and they look really smart.

ok what is the difference between gaiters and chaps?
i have two pairs- one are leather and suede and zip up the side, and one are leather and do up the back? would they have a different name?

I don't like riding in long boots, probably because I can never find a pair to fit so I always compete in black jod boots and black leather gaiters. I made sure I got a really plain pair of black gaiters so unless you are close up they look like long boots and nice and comfy for me :)

Your suede ones are chaps, the smarter, leather ones are gaitors.

I have to wear gaitors when competing as I have big feet and skinny legs and have searched everywhere for a fitting pair of boots with no luck!

Chaps - Have a straight shape accross the top and zip up the side. The zip normally goes from top to bottom. Can be made of any material from leather or suede to neoprene.

Gaiters - Have a shaped top (like smart leather boots) and zip up the back, like zipped boots would. The zip normally goes from bottom to top. They are always made of leather to look like long boots.

The ones you have that zip up the back are gaiters. Gaiters are the ones which are allowed in competitions and should be worn with a matching pair of short boots.

err. no... that is NOT true. Gaiters are most certainly not compulsory for BE! you can wear them as an alternative to long boots!
