My 15 yr old daughter's being bullied by women on her yard and basically the owner has nothing to do with the yard, never goes on there, and relies on a hardnosed woman to basically run it for her. She believes anything this woman says and after a misunderstanding with her our horse's hay nets and water container were mysteriously empty so we were reported for neglect.
I couldn't believe it when a guy from HAPPA showed up but he could see quite clearly there was nothing to be concerned about and that someone was just making trouble.
The other day one of the women was informed I wanted to sell my horse, and offered me a pittance which I refused, and lo and behold, this morning, only a couple of hours after my daughter had been up there before school, the same thing happened and the owner phoned to complain that someone had reported that our horse had no hay or water! She then told me I had a week to get off!! I have a large order of hay and straw being delivered tomorrow and I have tried to find other stables nearby and close to my daughter's school, without success, so I cannot move off so quickly but she has threatened that if I'm not off in a week she will have my horse removed.
I'm amazed at how horrible they all are. I have nothing in writing and she didn't even take a deposit from me and I have told her that she has to give me a month's notice in writing and that if she touches or removes my horse I will get the police involved. She has no reason to order us to leave and I think it's because one of her buddies wants our stable. Can she do this?

Why would you want to stay there anyway? It sounds awful.

You have no contract, so she could actually give you immediate notice for same day if she wanted to (unkind & unfair, but she 'could') so why do you think she should give you a months notice?

Can you cancel your delivery temporarily? Looks like you have a busy weekend going round tackshops/feed merchants & the like

I don't see how she can have the right to physically remove my horse - surely that's horse theft? If she left it out so it could be harmed then she would be guilty of endangering animals, which wouldn't do her reputation any good. You're right...it's awful there, and I don't want to stay so I'll be off as soon as I can!

I'm afraid if you are asked toleave you have to go.
Cancel your delivery tonight until you find somewhere, and just buy enough to feed your horse for now.
When the relationship breaks down to this extent no matter who is to blame, just get the horse somewhere else even temporarily and leave.
Your best option is to write her a letter after you leave saying exactly what you have said here and that you feel extremely upset how she has behaved.
You could just go up there and find your horse tied outside her boundary, so don't trust her, move..

No right to take your horse, no, but as most police are clueless about horse affairs, I'd get the horse off asap before anything mysterious happens to it.

If the horses safety is in question, get it off straight away.

If not, then unless specified otherwise notice is normally assumed to be the period of rent paid up. So if you pay weekly, a weeks notice, if monthly, a month.

TBH tho, I def wouldnt get forage delivered there, and I would be outta there.

Not exactly true. In such matters where there is no formal contract.Notice is taken as the intervals betwean rent payments. Eg if you pay fortnightly ,two weeks. Monthly,1 Month.

I dont understand how any livery owner can behave in this manner but it seems all too common - a yard I was on a girl was given an hours notice and basically screamed at until she left - it was awful and they get away with it too

unfortunatley it happens alot and it can be so hard to find somewhere so quick as you dont have time to check out another yard ect i wish you luck and hope you find a nice yard very soon

I know Mike, but have witnessed 1st hand the experience quoted below by Hevs, so hence my post as not all stick to even rental payment dates

Not pleasant - took in 2 ladies last yr with their ponies for 4 nights after they had that sort of treatment - they were given till dusk on same day...
