got a new mare on the yard belonging to mums friend and shes taken me up on my offer to school her and she also wants me to ride her out.
shes 7 and although has babyish tendencies shes very trusting of her rider and is the pleaser type. now, when riding in she's very lethargic and will stop when she feels like it. on a hack, she works forward beautifully into a contact and doesn't stop at all; lovely and forward although very very aware. so will she be able to have this attitude in the school eventually? what do you think.

also, the previous owners said she'll pop a jump but its an effort. we've not jumped her yet but do you think she'll be able to be taught? thanks in advance

My new mare is very similar. She is lovely and forward out hacking but lazy as hell in the school! I try to keep my schooling interesting IE poles, lateral work etc. However I also have to be firm and insist she works when I ask her. I carry a schooling whip and she gets a quick tap tap if she ignores me. I do appreciate her views and we do a lot of schooling whilst out hacking, I like to take advantage of her better attitude and work on powering up hills with good engagement, leg yielding, SI on forestry paths etc. I allow plenty of time for just messing about and relaxing on hacks along with the work. I have accepted Darcey is never going to enjoy "work" so I try to balance things so we are both happy. At the end of the day one hours work out of 24 isn't a lot to ask for!

i was thinking of using her hacking attitude as an oppurtunity to sneakily school! :D but thanks, will use a schooling whip to keep her motivated and i agree, i'm sure she can handle schooling a couple hours a week as long as she's allowed to hack
