Okay so this may not be very coherent, and I will try and get a pic up tomorrow.

I have began loaning a young mare, whose owner has had her since Feb. She's fantastic except one big issue; her ears. You cannot get near them, you can get a headcollar on her, but the bridle is a big no no. Anyway, on closer inspection, it appears her ears have these small sort of scaley appearing (but look v.dry), scabs inside both of her ears, her owner told me it was eczema but I don't know if they have dealt with it. The mare always shakes her ears around and will shake her head sometimes.

Anyway, today I began some work on getting her to let me touch her ears, I got her to accept me touching around her bridle path just about, with lots of reward for it, but it doesn't help I'm a short ass and she throws her head up, you can tell she really hates them being touched.

Decided that I really need to do some research, so had all my vet manuals and bibles out and was scouring through them, and googled 'ear eczema in horses' but nothing useful came up in images, I've looked at ear mites, aural plaque and otitis externa, however none seem to match what is in her ears. Am thinking I'm just going to have to ring her owner and we get the vet out again, because I do not want to ride her with ears in her condition and want them treated, because I don't want her to be in anymore discomfort any longer.

So; my question is really, can you think of anything that fits this description (promise I'll get a photo tomorrow) and how it can be dealt with? Vets aren't very kind with fees, and we're both skint, so would love to know if we can deal with it first.

Thanks x

Are you sure it's not Aural Plaque?? My horse has Aural Plaque in his ears, they are white, scaly, dry patches.

To bridle it is often better to undo a cheek piece, place the headpiece carefully over her ears and then slip the bit in the side of her mouth and then do up the cheek piece. No stress for you or the horse that way.
