I know this has probably been done before but I've read previous threads and now I'm even more confused! I've got a 5 month old Boston terrier puppy who has the worse wind ever, before my other half banishes him to the garden forever I've been told to try him on raw food. Anyway started yesterday with some chicken and today seems so much better......but I've always thought you cant give dogs chicken bones but after reading a previous thread it seems they are ok if they're raw, is this right? Also what else can i give him? is it literally any raw meat ...... also girl at the pet shop says mix it with rice and pasta but will this start the farts off again?!

Yes raw bones are fine- raw feeding is not just a case of raw chicken tho it needs a bit of balance to make sure your dog is getting all the right nutrients...... 80% muscle meat 10% bone 10% offal are rough guide lines. There is a sticky at the top of here with all you need to know I believe......

Any raw bones are fine, some people don't feed large beef bones but I do.

A typical day for my lot would be a chicken leg/thigh in the morning. Evening feed would be minced meat, I get mine from Berriewood, and two or three times a week I would add some fish/offal/yoghurt.

I wouldn't feed any cereal at all, thats really the point of putting them on a raw diet. They would also get a few left over vegetables, and raw bones when it suits.

However I am not sure if it is the cure all for farts!

Thanks you, yeah obviously i know it needs to be mixed up a bit but wasn't sure what else to add, just happened to have chicken in the fridge. Lady at the pet shop has recommended some sort of frozen tripe that you break off and defrost everyday, can't remember the name. Sounds disgusting! I used to work in a kennels but most of the dogs were labs or German Shepherds who ate pretty much anything and had no problems.

Thanks you, will save me ages cutting out the bones!

mine get chicken necks, and the pet mince from the butchers which is minced offal, valves, tubes, cartlidge, meat. once a week I give them oily fish, and they get meal left overs from me which can include pasta and rice. They eat carrots, all they can steal from the horses, and as much sheep and horse poo as they can when I am not looking. I dont give rice and pasta as standard. And my whippet does not like her meat cooked, she is so funny, if I dont have the chicken necks she will pick at her food and decide not to bother until I get necks. Mine dont actually like bones, so the only ones I get them to eat are in the necks which is fine. I find my dogs are far far less windy on raw

Thank you.......all seems to be ok so far! Less wind. Not keen on the liver we gave him yesterday though. Yeah why is it no matter what food you buy them they will turn their noses up yet will happily eat horse poo?!

Sods Law :p

Try flash frying it, sometimes this helps, mine prefer kidneys.

Mine eats liver if the others are nearby and it has salmon oil poured on! I have been known to trick him by pretending it's a treat and dropping it from a height :o

Try not to introduce too much too fast, just chicken for the first week, then introduce one new protein each week. My current dog has been on raw for 3 months now and get tea tonight was mixed game mince, ox liver and chicken heart. I don't feed any rice or pasta as dogs don't need and can't process carbs properly. My girl wouldn't eat liver til recently, try blending it and only add a tiny bit to start or you really will know about stinky bum syndrome ;-)

Try chicken livers. My dog refuses to eat any other sort of liver regardless of cooking it, trying to disguise it etc. But she goes crazy for chicken liver.

I was advised that raw chicken should always be frozen and then thawed when required as this will kill of the bugs ( campylobacter?) which is very dangerous to dogs if the meat is given fresh.

It definitely won't kill the bugs! we store such bugs at -80C so they won't mind a household freezer at all (realistically your dogs stomach acid/immune system should mean they are ok)
