Not a massive drama, but I'm trying to re-think my girls' diet.. Can anyone give me any names of chaff feeds that are just chaff? Not bothered about fancy additives as I want to use a supplement, but want NO molasses.. Does anyone know a chaff that is just a chaff?

I'm already feeding HiFi Lite, but that's the thing, it's not molasses free - I keep finding lumps of molasses in it!

Last time I tried my girls with Readigrass, they wouldn't eat it, but that was on it's own. I'm also thinking of switching to Fast Fibre & am just looking for a chaff to bulk it up a bit & increase chewing time for winter, so maybe mixing the two would work?

That's why I want it to be chaff only, as it's just going to be for bulking up Fast Fibre. My girls are good-doers & SS is post-lami so feeds are just to get supplements & some extra fibre into them..

Hi fi lite and hi fi molasses free are different. The lite does still contain some molasses, but the molasses free version is exactly that.

Do your local feed store stock their own straw chaff? If not then honeychop is one to look at, topspec also do a topchop lite which is molasses free too.

Thanks guys, this is really helpful - I didn't realise HiFi did one that is actually molasses free :) I think either that or the TopSpec one will be better for my girls - that honey chop one has a higher sugar content (I know it's natural, but I'm such a worrier!) & I think one of the other two will be easier to get hold of. I'm always so busy!
Now just need to find out how much the HiFi one is to decide; TopSpec give you the price but HiFi don't.. There must be a reason for that? ;)

I'm so glad you asked that! I normally feed Baileys light chaff as my big horse can't cope with molasses but the feed store didn't have any yesterday so I got hi fi lite, but didn't really read the bag. Opened it this morning and it is all sticky - d'oh!

Oh, dear. Are we so old fashioned still in NZ? Chaff is still chaff (lucerne or oaten) and it comes in big sacks. And it's just chaff. LOL.

I have a friend who makes his own. He bought a cheap second hand chaff cutter. Saves a lot of money too... We have got too used to buying packet feeds nowadays! (Myself included)

Both TopChop & HF Molasses Free are made with alfalfa (as well as oat straw) but say they are suitable for laminitics..? :S

My girls wouldn't be having huge amounts of it, as I'm not planning on using it as a hay replacer as such, so would SS be okay with that?

Their feeds will be based more on Fast Fibre, with some chaff thrown in to increase chewing time.

And I think I'm going to go with TopSpec All-in-One for the supplement as it really does seem to cover all bases :)

I use dengie sugar free (molasses free). It says 'new' on the packet, maybe it is new to not have the molasses in it. It seems to be alphapha with small compressed alphapha nuggets in it, quite tasty according to the ponies!

Thanks, I'll have a look at that too :) It's good to know there are some genuine molasses-free feeds out there now.. I like to be very much in control of what my girls are eating nowadays :p
