Can someone PLEASE explain....

If my horse is out I only go and see her once a day. When I visit she comes in, eats, gets groomed, probably ridden. The bare minimum is gets feet picked out, checked and given her medication. When she is stabled she gets seen morning and evening. Day of the week makes no difference, obviously.
 
mine live out, I only go up once a day unless its really cold and I need to put extra hay out, or its warm in the day and I need to put rugs back on in the evening?
 
My horse is stabled at night so I go up in the morning to feed, muck out and turn out. In the afternoon he's ridden, fed and put to bed.
Even if he was out 24/7 i'd still go up twice a day. I went up one afternoon to find he'd caught his leg in a strap. Longest he'd been like that would have been a couple of hours at most but if I only went up once he'd have been left like that all night and probably injured himself
 
It's not for my benefit guys, my horses get done at least twice a day 365 days a year, it's for the bf who as much as I try and explain won't grasp the fact!

He is so helpful but doesn't get why they are so needy... His work dogs however can't possibly go a day without their routine but my horses should :)))

His excuse is apparently I don't do them on Sunday mornings...umm no dear I have just been and gone and got back into bed before you are even up :D
 
I've given my mare a mobile phone, she's old & wise enough to know whether something is worth bothering me with, & asked her to keep an eye on daughters too. So when I go up once a week for a 6hr fast hack I just fill up waters & throw a weeks worth of hay in.
 
I always at least check twice daily, if god forbid they broke a leg or had colic I'd feel terrible wondering how long they'd waited for help.
 
OP I sympathise with you but tbh it now goes in one ear and out the other. Or my reply is "Why don't they just play 1 game of football a day, why do you have to listen to 3 games in succession". He knows now that if he moans at me, I moan back over the 5 live commentary or ask the most ridiculous things about the match.
 
you obviously need to train your horses to use the internet, then they can go on one of those takeaway food ordering sites to have their feed and hay delivered. That's what we did, although he does waste a lot of time on forum sites wanting advice on his rubbish owner :)
 
I would dump your boyfriend, when my ex started questioning why I had to see my horse twice a day it was a downward spiral.
 
It really depends on your circumstances. If you keep your horses in an isolated field, then yes, twice a day. I keep my horse on a farm where the farmer drives past her field in his tractor about 50 times a day. His wife has horses so would absolutely recognise colic or a broken leg and is in and out doing hers. The girl who shares my field works there. So the longest my horse would be left is overnight, same as anyone's really. If my horse actually had colic or some other condition that required it I would be up several times in the night if necessary. You adapt your horsekeeping to fit the circumstances.

He just thinks horses are needy :)
 
Glad you think so ds, & it just goes to show horses are fine left for days, because in all these years she hasn't rang me even once!

Little legs what a nice horse you have! Wish mine would be like that! I can't even leave a weeks worth of hay as one throws it over door and eats haynets :( lol
 
Littlelegs speaks wise words. Years ago, I gave my horses a fax machine, they only ever faxed me once. It was a picture of one of their bums. So childish.

Nowadays, although i try to ignore them for days, they are at the house so they end to just throw stones at my bedroom window. Don't think they need anything, think they are just trying to piss me off.

Your BF is right, you should only need to check them once a week, and once a fortnight in the summer.
 
I wish someone would explain to me why my OH requires attention at least twice a day. He's quite capable of operating the fridge, the microwave and the remote control. I give him hay and water ad lib, take him for walks, and let him out in the garden for a run morning and evening. But he still box walks, weaves and cribs. Can anyone help?

Have you had his teeth and back checked? Does his tack fit correctly?

I didn't bother about teeth, back and saddle; that's for wimps. I had a parelli person wave a carrot stick in his face and he walked backwards, but after that he started rearing and biting.

I'll call the hunt tomorrow.
 
I've never had that problem beans, I'm sure mine don't eat all their hay at once, otherwise surely she'd have rang me?
Abacus has your oh been gelded? If not then I'd get it done asap, should mellow him out. And if you aren't riding regularly, get a sharer or pay someone to ride.

That's quite drastic. :eek:

Why not turn him out for six months and see if he changes his attitude?
 
I might offer him free to a good home - anyone interested? He's quite well house trained, doesn't leave a mess around, and can cook a mean roast. Non-horsy but tolerant. Will geld if required.
