Can someone remind me why I don't own horses anymore?

You would rather lie in bed and read the papers on a wet Sunday morning. You find the smell of hay and leather tack repulsive. You do not feel calmness when you hear the sound of rythmical munching. You like clean finger nails. You like to smell good all the time. You like your car to be clean, with no stray wisps of hay and straw. You prefer a predictable hobby which can be enjoyed in a warm dry place.

You don't have to try to get this clean.

Yes, he's grey underneath that

You like your mother in law to look at you as a normal person as you have the spare time to clean every inch of your house and not just your tack room !

You like having a black bank balance

You like having blood in your fingers when it is cold outside and not dispite the agony have to break 6 inch thick ice with a brick then drive to work.

You like the fact that your hair can look nice more than one day on the trot ... and I am not talking a fancy pony tail !!

Yeah! Plus you hate wet, muddy rugs which get you covered and weigh 10 stone and all the other trials winter brings, rain, cold, frozen water, dark mornings/nights. But also the summer brings the same kind of hastles, sunburn, fly bites, ragwort, green water bins...cool early morning or late evening rides, having a friend who doesnt judge you, listens to your every whim yet doesnt interrupt with their opinions!!!! :D

finding hay/ shavings/ hair in your bra

finding dead rats in your water bucket

Having a mouse jump out of your welly as you go to put it on

changing into your jods in the drivers seat of your car afterwork

oh the list .... but that grey should be enough to put you off for a while

More nicer clothes to wear other than horsey makes
More Money in bank each month
Clean fingernails
Smell fresher all the time
Hair looking and smelling lovely for more than 5 mins
Cold wet dark lousy days can be spent indoors in the warmth not having to go out to get wet cold horsey in from boggy field
Muddy wet heavy rugs to changed

I could go on........ this is all the reason why I have another.... I missed it all tooo much :D

The satisfation knowing your horse is all tucked up cosy and warm in his bed with full belly of feed and hay and big bed :D

1) Getting ready for work in the morning is almost an enjoyable experience instead of a mad rush.
2) You can check the weather out of the window without a feeling of dread.
3) Income now matches or even exceeds out goings
4) The list of things you HAVE to do at the weekend is considerably smaller
5) You can smile when people are tearing their hair out over the price / availability of hay]
6) You no longer have to suck up to the boss just to attend the vet visit.
7) The farrier no longer has a hold on you.
8) No longer visiting the yard twice a day means you can now choose who you associate with.
9) You can now do things on a whim.
10) Holidays are now possible.

.......shall I go on?

All that said I still miss having a horse. :(

You don't have the vet on speed dial.
You don't have to go poo picking in the rain.
No more hay deliveries when the rest of the yard suddenly vanishes and you have to stack 200 bales all on your own.
you can wear matching underwear because it doesn't matter if its practical ro ride in.
you don't smell slightly of wee

I'm with you there. I even poo picked my friends paddock as a surprise on Sunday. They had gone to Gatcombe and she said I could ride her horse.

I rode her mare and realised they would be back quite late so had a lovely hour trailing up and down the field with a wheelbarrow.

I am half heartedly horsehunting but the thought of evaluating a strange horse and its owner looking at me sideways is all a bit daunting.

- Being rich, having spare cash to go out for dinner, buy a new car, go on holiday because evry last penny is not going on the horse.
- Having nice nails and clean hair and clothes, being able to get dressed nicely in the morning and being able to stay like that all day.
- Feeling smug when its peeing down with rain and blowing a gale and you do not have to go outside if you don't want to.
- Not being tied down. Being able to meet up with friends without saying 'I must leave by 4pm to do my horse' or 'I can only meet up after 8 because I have to do my horse'.
- You can look forward to winter and a white christmas without it turning into an utter nightmare or risking your life to go to the yard and dealing with pee'd off horses who are fed up with being inside.
- Being able to go out at night and get drunk without having to get up at 7am in the morning with a hangover to do the horse.
- Being able to have a lesiurely breakfast and bath in the morning before work and not turn up at the office with hay in your hair and knackered because you have been up since 5.30 and have already done 2 hours work with your horse.
- Not having to worry constantly over the fact that your horse is possibly not wearing the right rug, in the right field, has lost a shoe, is ill, is being naughty to ride, saddle doesnt fit ect ect ect.
- Not having to worry that you are wasting your horse or overdoing it with your horse.
- Not having to worry about your riding and how its affecting your horse.
- Not having to worry about how much hay is, where you are going to get it from, how long will it last.
- Not having to deal with other liveries who do your head in every day.

I'm sure there are lots more. I love my horse, not sure what I would do without him but I do sometimes think how stress free and more financially abundant life would be without one!

you can have a social life
you can buy YOURSELF some shoes every 6 weeks instead of 4 pieces of metal that go and get muddy and worn down (skillfully and amazingly crafted pieces of metal- for all the farriers on here)
you can be accepted as a normal being into society ;)

the list goes on........ :D

Isn't this thread supposed to STOP the OP from wanting a horse?! I don't know about them, but I'm now looking on the classifieds!! I can't even afford one!!

I gave mine to my mum two years ago now, and although I still ride her twice a week through the summer (when she's sound, that is), I'm still getting worse and worse horsey withdrawal symptoms. I NEED a horse

I dreamt the other night that I sold the house I live in to go and get somewhere smaller and cheaper, and buy a horse. I woke up and found myself thinking about selling the house, until I realised that I rent it anyway... :o

Oh, to have a (sound) horse (that's actually mine)!

You no longer shovel money in one end and S*** out of the other end
Stepping out of your wellies in to the mud in your socks no longer has the same apeal on a cold wet winters morning:eek:

I sold one and put one on loan earlier this year - like you I keep getting the urge for another (I have owned for over 35 years so its a bit odd) but then I think of the following

1) I now only see one 5 o'clock each day
2) I went late night shopping Thursday and bought MYSELF some new clothes as I don't need to buy any new rugs for this winter
3) My incomings actually exceed my outgoings and I am managing to save money.
4) I had my care valeted a month ago and it is still clean
5) I now have time to do the garden myself instead of paying a gardener (more savings!)
6) I have time to keep the house tidy and clean (ish ;)) and am no longer horrified when friends or neighbours pop by.

I will have another horse, but not for a while yet, need to get a new car and finish decorating the house first, but then I will be happily horse shopping again and giving up all the above again :)

This thread reminds me why I don't have a horse! I have considered getting one of course but the crap summer we are having makes me think all that hard work isn't currently offset by long leisurely summer hacks!

You like a healthy bank balance and if the OH is not horsey, no sarky " your horse gets more pampering and you time than I do"!! :( :(
