can someone take me hunting with them please...?

I think in a way I'm stuck with the preconceived idea that hunting involves many 4' hedges and stone walls and lots of wire and huge ditches. The more I read and hear the more I realise that it isn't always that way! Stuff it I want to go, and if I wuss out at everything then I'll know not to go again... but if I jump things then I'll probably be hooked!
 
Silm, go find yourself a load of back issues of H&H and look at the jumps - seriously not big are they?! With the OBH I don't think I have ever jumped anything over 3ft3 (and that was only once - average height is under 3ft) and there are ALWAYS people who do not jump so you can go round if you don't want to jump. My friend hunts with the Garth and there is usually a non-jumping Field Master as well as a Jumping one, so you can swop and change as the mood takes you

I have never jumped wire here in Oxon, I don't think the land owners around here go in for wire, it is hunt jumps all the way!
 
I have a horsey that is fab to hunt, well behaved, you are welcome to take him out with Vale of Aylesbury and Garth & South Berks Meets.

PM me if you are interested, he is competing this weekend at OTECC at arena uk but free after that as will be retiring from SJ and competitions but LOVES his hunting.

I would love to hunt too. I went out for a pre-Christmas meal last week with a load of people who all hunt and they really made me want to go out with them. They kept saying get yourself a hireling and come along. Trouble is they are all much better riders than me e.g. one of them does stunt work for films and TV and I think I would be a liability even on an experienced hunter. I am a total wuss too and can't jump for toffee. Best forget it methinks. Good luck to any of you who go for the first time though. I bet you will love it!
 
Park Farm, Oakley, Basingstoke will do you a hireling (they have a webby if you google). They go with the Vine and Hants hunts
 
I'm still waiting to go hunting myself, as all my mates are toooo scared to even try. I have never hunted before and have a young mare who has never hunted either, would luv to give it a go, my nearest hunt club is with the surrey union they have some lovely hunts, and every week some thing is going on, and you don't have to jump on some of their hunts so if any one lives near me p.m me and we can go together i have transport...
 
I started riding again last month after 12 years out of the saddle and HH's horses look after me really well. Have progressed from Paris, used to be Jan Overend's, to Jake, a coloured cob. I'm not used to riding cobs and find they are not as comfortable as something with a longer stride, but at least they can be trusted to look after me!!

Hiya

I've hired a horse to go hunting on Exmoor, so no jumping, but had the time of my life. I'm not keen on riding different horses, so was given a lightweight hogged cob. Wow wee, she was brill. Fittest horse I have ever ridden, and so well behaved. It was an expensive day out, but fine for a holiday as I had saved up!
 
where abouts are you and how far are you prepared to travel?

i know of some really good hirelings in north yorkshire if thats any help, and the Bilsdale and the Hurworth are both really friendly hunts. the bilsdale (who i hunt with) are the oldest fox hunt in the country, and hunt over moors, farmland and forestry

don't worry about people being better riders than you out hunting! i hunt with some folk who i don't think have ever had more than a couple of lessons - 1)this is a horse 2)this is what it does, now get on...
and you think i'm joking!

and hirelings are good at their job, and put up with some truly awful (almost to the point at which i'd want that person off my horse) riding, so they know how to look after you.

go on - give it a go and i'll bet you're hooked in 10 min flat!
